Arsenal Women Face Tough Task Against Lyon Women in Champions League Semi-finals

William Hill News previews this weekend’s Women’s Champions League semi-finals.

Prediction

  • Bayern Munich Women 0-2 Barcelona Women
  • Arsenal Women 1-2 Lyon Women

First up, outright favourites Barcelona travel to Munich for what the odds suggest should be a one-sided affair against Bayern.

Then on Sunday, defending champions Arsenal host Lyon at the Emirates in what promises to be a thrilling and unpredictable contest.

The odds suggest a close tie between the two giants, the later semi-final match-up is likely to go the distance and may need the second leg to separate the two, but given Lyon’s flawless record at the Emirates, they could cause another upset on Sunday.

Bayern Munich Women (6/1) vs Barcelona Women (1/4)

Bayern Munich host a Barcelona side in frightening form. The Spanish giants are this season’s leading scorers in the Women’s Champions League with 32 goals, ten more than any other club, and are favourites to go all the way this year.

Leading that attack is Polish striker Ewa Pajor, who is averaging more than a goal per game this season, supported by two-time Ballon d’Or winner in Alexia Putellas.

Remarkably, all of this has come despite the long-term absence of triple Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí who suffered a broken leg back in December.

However, Bayern aren’t without hope. Danish forward Pernille Harder leads their scoring charts on seven Champions League goals this campaign, and there’s a notable venue stat to cling to: Barcelona have never won away at Bayern Munich.

But the wider picture is daunting. Barca have won four of their last five ties against Bayern, including a 7-1 demolition earlier this season and are chasing a sixth consecutive Champions League final, while Bayern have never progressed beyond this stage.

Punters are certainly anticipating Barcelona to extend their remarkable run to the final and the odds suggest that they will get the job done on Saturday.

Arsenal Women (29/20) vs Lyon Women (11/8)

This second semi-final shapes up as a much tighter affair, with defending champions Arsenal hosting eight-time winners Lyon at the Emirates on Sunday.

Arsenal will be looking to their danger woman, Alessia Russo, who was essential to the Gunners’ toppling of Chelsea in the quarter-finals, while Leah Williamson and Mariona Caldentey will be crucial to controlling the tempo at home.

Nevertheless, Lyon’s threat is equally clear. Young attacker Melchie Dumornay has scored in both legs of the semi-finals in each of the last two seasons and is the player Arsenal will be most desperate to contain.

Lyon are managed by Jonatan Giraldez, previously the architect of Barcelona’s Champions League glory, who has reshaped the squad into a side unbeaten in 17 consecutive Women’s Champions League group stage matches.

History at this venue may be a concern for the hosts though, as Lyon have won on each of their last three visits to the Emirates, including a 2-1 first leg win here last season, before Arsenal spectacularly overturned it with a 4-1 victory in France. Both teams know this tie is unlikely to be settled in London.

UEFA Women’s Champions League 2025/26 – Outright:

  • Barcelona Women – 8/15
  • Arsenal Women – 3/1
  • Lyon Women – 6/1
  • Bayern Munich Women – 10/1
