Steve Harmison: Root Will Lead England To Ashes Glory

ICC Champions Trophy Final

Steve Harmison has tipped England to win The Ashes in Australia for the first time in 15 years.

England haven’t won a Test down under in that period, but Harmison is expecting a highly competitive contest this time around, with Joe Root fancied for a big series.

The former number one ranked bowler in the world fancies England to win in Perth and expects a strong debut from Aussie quick Brendan Doggett.

Harmison said, “England will get off to a good start, like they have done in previous tours.”

He added, “Australia will not be in disarray, because they’ve lost two players. I think Brendan Doggett will get off to a good start.”

The lower order will be key in this match, according to Harmison.

“The biggest thing for me, I predict the runs scored between numbers seven and 11 will be the difference in winning the game. England are strong from that point, and that could tip the balance.”

There’s no surprise in who Harmison picks to top score for England.

“It’s a no-brainer. He’s the greatest player that’s ever played the game for England, and that’s Joe Root.

“I think he’s coming to Australia to set a record… he’s coming to Australia quietly confident. The last three years, he’s in the form of his life.”

Harmison continued, “I don’t think he’s coming to average 50, he’s coming to average 150!”

Overall, Harmison is predicting a far more competitive series than England’s recent Ashes tours.

“This could be 3-2 either way. My head’s telling me it’s 3-2 to Australia, my heart’s telling me it’s 3-2 to England.

“I’m also thinking, if England don’t get off to a good start, Australia could blow England away and go 4-1. Just because they could get on top of England, and it’s a lonely place, a difficult place to go and tour, when Australia get on top.”

“I’m backing Ben [Stokes], I’m backing Joe Root to silence a few doubters. I hope Joe Root has the best time, I hope England win. If I’m going to put my hat on it and say England, it will be 3-2, I can’t see it being 2-1.”

England are heavy cricket betting underdogs for the series, but this is the most highly anticipated Ashes in Australia since their triumphant tour 15 years ago.
