Australia will gain T20 revenge over England by winning the upcoming ODI series between the two sides, according to Michael Vaughan.

England claimed a 2-1 T20 series win over Australia in Southampton earlier this week, with the two teams next meeting at Old Trafford on Friday in the first of a three-match ODI series.

But while England are the reigning world champions in the one-day format and ranked as the number one ODI team on the planet, former captain Vaughan feels Australia will come out on top this time around having now had some time to acclimatise to their surroundings.

“I reckon Australia will win,” Vaughan said. “I think they’ve got the three games of T20 experience [against England under their belt], got themselves back in the groove.

“[Jos] Buttler will be back, he’ll be having some fun, he’ll score some runs. Joe Root’s got a point to prove – I think he’ll be consistent across the three games. But I just think the Aussies, now they’ve had three games [in England], I think they’ve got a little bit of momentum behind them. So, Australia to win 2-1.”

Vaughan is expecting an exciting ODI series in Manchester and believes both sets of bowling attacks will thrive with the conditions at Old Trafford.

“The pitches will be hard and fast, you’d think,” Vaughan said. “[Mitchell] Starc, [Pat] Cummins, Jofra [Archer], Mark Wood all bowling over 90 miles per hour – I think it’s going to be a great spectacle. It should also offer a little bit of spin so the two leg-spinners should have a little bit of a say as well.”

Vaughan added: “Who to do what? I think David Warner will score runs for Australia. I think for England, Joe Root will be very consistent, Buttler will have a couple of impacts with the bat, he always does. With the ball in hand, [Adil] Rashid once again for England – don’t ever go against Rashid, particularly on a wicket that’s going to do some damage with the spin. For Australia with the ball, I’m going for Mitchell Starc.

“The Aussies to win 2-1. The end of a great summer – full credit to all the teams that have played [in England]. The cricket has been of a very high standard…The Aussies to win this last one-day series. What a summer it’s been.”
