Stage 19 from Gap to Alpe d’Huez looks set to be a showcase for the overall contenders, with Tadej Pogačar fancied to win on the classic climb and tighten his grip on yellow according to William Hill News, but there is room for a GC‑adjacent climber like Sepp Kuss or Isaac del Toro to challenge for the stage.

A selective break goes early, but the race ultimately explodes on the classic 21 hairpins, with Pogačar launching a decisive attack in the final third of Alpe d’Huez to win Stage 19, extend his overall lead, and tick off one of the Tour’s most iconic finishes that neither he nor Vingegaard has yet claimed.
Route and racing context
Stage 19 is short but brutal: 127.9km from Gap to Alpe d’Huez with around 3,500m of climbing, finishing on the legendary 13.8km ascent at an average of roughly 8 percent.
The route front‑loads difficulty, hitting the Col Bayard and Col du Noyer in the opening 25km, followed by the Col d’Ornon before the final wall of switchbacks above Bourg‑d’Oisans.
The 2026 Tour GC picture coming into the Alpine double is that Pogačar leads Remco Evenepoel by just over four and a half minutes, with Isaac del Toro third at around seven minutes back, and the rest of the top 10 already well adrift.
With a second Alpe d’Huez summit finish still to come on Stage 20, this first ascent is likely to be raced aggressively but with an eye on the following day, which slightly increases the chances of a strong breakaway surviving – provided it contains riders no danger to the podium.

Pogačar, Kuss and del Toro are the three‑star picks for the day, with Arensman, Carapaz and Tobias Johannessen just behind and names like Evenepoel, Bernal, Adam Yates and Großschartner in the outsider tier.
Given the profile and current form, three main scenarios stand out:
- GC showdown: UAE keeps the break on a tight leash, Evenepoel’s Soudal squad helps control, and the stage is decided among the GC favourites on Alpe d’Huez. In that case Pogačar, who has yet to win here, is best placed to stamp his authority, with del Toro and Kuss the most likely challengers.
- Strong breakaway: A large break forms over Bayard and Noyer, packed with good climbers but no top‑10 threats. If teams are happy to let them go, riders like Carapaz or Arensman could fight out the win while the GC battle happens a minute or two behind.
- Hybrid outcome: A reduced break survives to the foot of Alpe d’Huez, but Pogačar or Evenepoel bridge across on the lower slopes and contest the stage after reeling them in.
Given Pogačar’s overall lead, explosiveness on steep gradients and history of targeting iconic climbs, the most probable script is that UAE sets a hard tempo, allows an early break some rope, and then launches Pogačar on the final 5–6km once the group is thinned.
