Friday’s Stage 19 is one of the final major tests of this year’s Vuelta, with a tough uphill finish providing another opportunity for the climbers and general classification contenders to make their mark.
Enric Mas remains in red heading into the final weekend, but with three categorised climbs before the finish and a brutal ascent to Peñas Blancas, there is plenty of scope for the overall standings to change.

Stage 19 is one of the longest stages of the race and will take the riders through the hills of the Málaga province before the decisive final climb. The route features the Puerto de las Abejas and Puerto del Viento before a long run towards Estepona and the ascent to Peñas Blancas.
The final climb is a serious test at 18.7km and an average gradient of 6.5%, with some of the opening ramps reaching 15%. It is the sort of finish where the strongest climbers can make a significant difference.
Who can win it?
Wout van Aert is the 13/8 favourite after another impressive Vuelta, but this is a very different test to the flatter stages where he has excelled.
Ethan Hayter is 2/1 and looks an interesting alternative on a stage that should suit a strong all-rounder capable of staying with the climbers before producing a strong finish.
Stefan Küng is 10/3, while Primož Roglič is 10/1 and Bruno Armirail is 11/1.
Prediction: Ethan Hayter to win Stage 19.
Hayter has the power to handle the long approach and the climbing ability to remain in contention when the race reaches Peñas Blancas, making the 2/1 shot our pick to take the stage.
General Classification Impact
Enric Mas heads into Stage 19 with a 2:06 advantage over Félix Gall, while Primož Roglič sits a further four seconds behind Gall in third.
With the finish coming at the top of a first-category climb, this could be one of the last opportunities for Roglič and the other GC contenders to put meaningful time into Mas before Saturday’s final mountain stage.
Gall has already shown he can stay with the best climbers, but Roglič will be looking to turn his strength on the toughest gradients into a move up the standings.
Prediction: Mas retains the red jersey, with Roglič putting pressure on Gall for second.
What to expect
Stage 19 could be a fascinating battle between the breakaway and the GC contenders.
The opening two-thirds of the stage give the escapees plenty of opportunities to build a gap, while the final climb to Peñas Blancas should bring the favourites to the fore.
With another brutal mountain stage still to come on Saturday, Mas will be keen to avoid unnecessary risks, but the likes of Roglič will know this is one of their final chances to change the shape of the podium.
Hayter gets our vote to take the stage, while the battle for the red jersey could set up a fascinating final weekend in Granada.
