Premier League Darts Night 11 preview: Can Clayton secure third Premier League victory on the bounce?

| BY News Team

The Premier League heads to Brighton for week 11, as the contest for those illusive top four spots in the table heats up. Can Jonny Clayton make his mark in Brighton after two successive victories?

We preview the best of the action below.

Dimitri Van den Bergh v Michael van Gerwen

Michael van Gerwen has cemented his position at the top of the table throughout the tournament. As the League’s current leader, and given his superb run of form this season, it’s no surprise he is 4/11 in this clash.

Last week’s display will have been bittersweet for van Gerwen, having claimed vengeance against Chris Dobey in the opening round, bettering him 6-2, before bowing out to the eventual winner Jonny Clayton in the semi-finals.

Dimitri Van den Bergh will be aware that he has just five nights left to claim a top four spot, and this week’s quarter-final opponent won’t make that task any easier to accomplish. At 21/10, the Belgium athlete will need to dig deep here and given his current seventh place ranking, that seems unlikely to materialise.

Given Van den Bergh is yet to claim a victory this season, and it seems unlikely his fate will change this week with such a challenging opponent. But if you fancy a whitewash, Michael van Gerwen to win the match, have the highest match checkout and also to notch the most 180s is priced at 9/4.

Chris Dobey v Gerwyn Price

Night one winner Chris Dobey has since dropped off, failing to replicate his earlier success. Almost the opposite is true for his opponent however.

Gerwyn Price is the heavy favourite at 2/5, and he comes into this matchup following a scintillating semi-final defeat to Peter Wright last week, just missing out on the finals with the end result 5-6. Despite the loss, his performance was undeniably entertaining, and he will be hunting down the top spot in the table.

Dobey is another who knows it’s now or never. While a second night’s victory wouldn’t necessarily earn him a top four spot, the tournament is beginning to heat up and the pressure is on. Never underestimate Dobey however, he has been in phenomenal form at some points in the competition, and the 19/10 underdog can’t be counted out just yet.

On balance, Price has been the better player and that is reflected in both the odds and the table, so a semi-final spot seems likely for the Welshman. If you fancy Price to win, a handicap of -1.5 may be worth taking at 4/6.

Peter Wright v Nathan Aspinall

In arguably the closest tie of the night, Peter Wright takes on Nathan Aspinall in what is set to be a nail-biting quarter-final matchup.

Looking at the table, one would see Aspinall as the clear favourite. But considering Snakebite’s recent form, this match is a coin flip. Last week saw Wright go toe-to-toe with Jonny Clayton in the final, before bowing out the 5-6 loser. Despite this, it was a thrilling game and Wright’s display of skill throughout the evening makes him a 10/11 shot here.

Aspinall hasn’t reached the finals since night two but has consistently reached the semi-finals regardless. Last week saw him defeated in the opening round against Jonny Clayton, and the 10/11 joint-favourite is currently in fifth place, tied on points with Michael Smith.

There is no doubt a win here is more significant for Aspinall as he takes aim at the top four, and it’s possible he hits the most 180s of the pair which is priced at 10/11. Of the two, Wright is fancied to win the night however, at odds of 10/1 to Aspinall’s 12/1.

Jonny Clayton v Michael Smith

Jonny Clayton has come into form over his past two performances, cleaning up with devastating effect in both Berlin and Birmingham.

The Welshman is 13/10 to win this quarter-final matchup, which speaks to the calibre of competition he will be facing in Michael Smith. Clayton has all the momentum behind him, but will he be able to shake the relentless force that is Smith?

Michael Smith has been dropped to fourth place following Clayton’s win in Birmingham, which may make this tie personal. The world number one is the 8/13 favourite despite having lost 6-1 to Peter Wright last week, which again speaks to the skill he possesses. Good form in Brighton could see Smith back to third place in the table, but first he has to get past Clayton.

While Clayton isn’t fancied in his opening match, he has surprised us more than once this season and at 9/1 to make it a third successive Premier League Night victory, it certainly isn’t off the cards that he pulls off the unthinkable in Brighton.
