Premier League Darts Night Nine preview: Will Van Gerwen make it to another final?

Premier League Darts at the O2

Night eight saw Van Gerwen make it to a fifth final in this season of the Darts Premier League and despite a way below bar performance that saw him thrashed 6-1 by Gerwyn Price, he will head to the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin as the clear favourite once again.

We preview the action of an intriguing Night Nine in the Darts Premier League below.

Dimitri Van den Bergh v Michael Smith

Michael Smith goes into this matchup as the odds on favourite at 4/7. Despite being knocked out at the quarter finals in his last two meetings, Smith has played some of his best darts this season – with the nature of the Premier League making it impossible for even the best players to stay consistent throughout.

Smith reached the final on night six and played a great match against the dominant force this season, Michael van Gerwen, only losing by two legs. His opponent Dimitri Van den Bergh has been as up and down as Smith and has struggled to make it to the final rounds of the night on numerous occasions so far this season, last making it to the final in night three where he was beaten by Smith.

Van den Bergh is 11/8 for the win here but we are backing him to find his form again after a poor run of results, and to get revenge on Smith for his defeat the one time he did start playing well.

Nathan Aspinall v Chris Dobey

The odds suggest this will be a very close matchup with both Nathan Aspinall and Chris Dobey looking to be following similar patterns of form. The two English players have played well this season but also regularly unexpectedly drop in form. They should both give every player in the Darts Premier League a good game and they have, but they also seem to fall away and not quite hit their top level.

Aspinall lost 6-0 to Van Gerwen in his last game at Night eight’s semi-final and hasn’t seen success since he made it to the final in night two. Dobey’s luck has been similar, taking a win on the opening evening before tailing off and not winning a single game again until night seven.

Based on that stat alone we are backing Aspinall at 4/5 to come through this and make it to another semi-final, though we aren’t sure he will get much further. Dobey at Evens is a punt for the bold bettor but one we wouldn’t take.

Jonny Clayton v Michael van Gerwen

This one won’t be as hard to predict as the previous ties as Michael van Gerwen’s five appearances in finals in this season of Premier League Darts see’s him as the clear favourite for victory in this match and the whole night’s event.

Van Gerwen is 1/3 to win here, a punt worth taking despite the low return, and his opponent Jonny Clayton has odds of 23/10, but that isn’t one we would recommend backing looking at the difference in form between the two.

Van Gerwen won on nights four, five, and six, and made it to the final in the first night and the most recent. He is the player to watch out for here and Jonny Clayton’s best run resulting in a loss to Van Gerwen in the final of night five doesn’t stand him in good stead.

Peter Wright v Gerwyn Price

Gerwyn Price has been the second-best player this season behind Van Gerwen, beating him in the final 6-1 last time out. He also won in the final the week before and took a win in the final on the second night as well – he is another player to watch out for and not one worth betting against.

With odds of 4/9 to win here we stand by that statement as it doesn’t seem Peter Wright, who is in poor form having not made it to a final yet this term, will have enough to defeat the Welshman in the form of his life.

Wright has only won one match so far this season and that was against Price, but we can’t see it happening again with the Scotsman’s odds at 7/4.
