Premier League Darts Night 14 preview: It’ll be all Wright on the Night!

| BY News Team

With just three weeks left to determine who will occupy the play-off spots and have the opportunity to advance and win this year’s championship, Premier League Night 14 is quickly approaching, making the matchups in Aberdeen crucial.

We preview all four of the quarter-final matches below.

Peter Wright v Michael Smith (19:15)

Up first in Aberdeen is none other than Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright! Wright takes on Michael Smith in the opening quarter-final of the evening. Peter Wright still sits bottom of the league table on four points so he is playing for pride now, and there’s no better place to do so than in front of his home fans in Aberdeen. Despite the final score being a 6-3 loss for the Scotsman last time out, Wright played well against Michael van Gerwen and actually had a better three-dart average than his opponent – he is 33/1 to win Night 14.

As for Michael Smith, he is currently sat fifth in the table and is breathing down the necks of those above him in the hunt for a play-off spot. This should be a good game with both players fighting for either play-offs or pride and if Wright can improve his finishing then he has every chance of a happy homecoming and is 21/10 to win the match. Peter Wright Win Match and Highest Match Checkout – Michael Smith Most 180s @7/1

Luke Littler v Nathan Aspinall (19:45)

The second quarter-final of Night 14 is a clash containing two of the top four, as Luke Littler and Nathan Aspinall take to the oche. Luke Littler has been in arguably his best form to date, winning Night 13 in emphatic style before going all the way in Austria to land his second European Tour title. Littler is flying and it will take someone special to halt his form.

Nathan Aspinall could be that man. These two met in last week’s semi-final and it went down to a final deciding leg. Luke Littler does seem to have Aspinall’s number as the two have met six times and he’s come out the victor on five occasions. If Nathan Aspinall can make the key moments in the game his, we think he can proceed past the current table topper. Nathan Aspinall is 19/10 to win the match.

Michael van Gerwen v Rob Cross (20:15)

The next quarter-final in Aberdeen is Michael van Gerwen up against Rob Cross. These two met on Night 13 and it’s fair to say Rob Cross smashed Michael van Gerwen in a game that ended 6-2 in favour of the Englishman. Michael van Gerwen played very poorly in that game and he only had an 11.11% checkout success rate. We expect a much better showing from van Gerwen in Aberdeen, and for him to bounce back and show Rob Cross a better version of himself.

Not only do we think that Michael van Gerwen will show a response, we think he will make a statement and grab the match treble in the process. Michael van Gerwen Win Match, Highest Match Checkout and Most 180s is 11/4.

Gerwyn Price v Luke Humphries (20:45)

The last quarter-final of the evening is Gerwyn Price versus Luke Humphries. Both players lost their opening matches last week, so one of them will go one better here in Aberdeen. Luke Humphries is world number one for a reason, but he has hit a slight lull in form recently, winning only five of his last 10 games. This being said, he still is second in the Premier League table and has all but guaranteed himself a place in the play-offs.

Gerwyn Price will be up against it, in his last three meetings with Luke Humphries he has lost rather decisively. Unfortunately for Price, we think he will fall short again. Luke Humphries is EVS to beat Gerwyn Price (1.5) in the Handicap Market. Meaning he must win by more than 1.5 legs.
