Premier League Darts Night 2 preview: Second throw of the dice for Price

| BY News Team

Premier League Darts rolls onto Night 2 from Berlin, and once more there are some striking matchups in the quarterfinals, with a replay of last week’s final between Gerwyn Price and eventual winner Michael Smith.

We preview all four of the quarterfinal matches below.

Nathan Aspinall v Michael van Gerwen (19:10)

Night 2 kicks off with fourth ranked player, Nathan Aspinall, taking on rank number two, Michael van Gerwen. Both players lost their retrospective quarterfinal matches on Night 1, so they will be looking to put in a big performance and bounce back.

Neither Aspinall nor Van Gerwen were pushovers in their quarters, and both were unlucky to come up against eventual finalists in the first round. However, Michael van Gerwen, based on the stats, did play a much better match than Aspinall as he had a 97.14 three dart average across the match with Michael Smith which went the full 11 legs. Michael van Gerwen’s scoring prowess may prove too much for Aspinall in this short format, as Aspinall’s three dart average in last week’s quarterfinal was 88.99.

Michael van Gerwen is known for liking to drop down to the treble 19 bed for his high scoring, this being said we like an alternative match treble of Michael van Gerwen Win Match and Highest Match Checkout, Nathan Aspinall Most 180s @9/2.

Michael Smith v Gerwyn Price (19:40)

Moving onto the second quarterfinal of the night, which offers Gerwyn Price another attempt at Michael Smith, after losing to him in last week’s final.

Smith didn’t allow Gerwyn Price much time at the oche last week, due to his astonishingly high scoring, with Price only throwing at a double on three occasions. Michael Smith will be looking to go one better than last year’s visit to Berlin with the Premier League, having lost to Jonny Clayton 6-4 in the final of Night 9 in the 2023 tournament.

Michael Smith hit five maximums against Price in last week’s final and also threw the highest checkout of the match with 120. We expect he could continue this form against Price, with an enhanced multiple of Michael Smith Over 4 180s & Michael Smith At Least 1 Checkout Over 99 priced at 13/2.

Luke Littler v Rob Cross (20:10)

The third quarterfinal features two Englishmen, Luke Littler and Rob Cross. The pair have only come head-to-head on one previous occasion in the semi-final of the 2023 World Championships, where Luke Littler came out on top with a decisive 6-2 victory.

Both players reached the semi-finals on Night 1, but both went no further. In Littler’s semi-final he had a huge three dart average of 105.31 having had 22 100+ visits, including five maximums. This is better than Cross, who had an average of 97.16 with only one maximum in his semi-final.

We think that Littler’s high scoring is going to sweep Cross aside once more and the only chance Cross has is that Littler’s doubling isn’t up to scratch, which will leave the door only slightly ajar, but Cross will have to take his chances. Luke Littler to get over 3 180s & at least 1 checkout Over 99 is an enhanced price of 11/4.

Luke Humphries v Peter Wright (20:40)

The last quarter final of the night includes both the favourite and outsider to be the night’s outright winner, with Luke Humphries the favourite at 3/1 to seal a win in Berlin.

Both players lost their quarterfinals on Night 1, meaning one of them will definitely go better this week. The pair have met nine times in their careers on the stage. Wright has won on six of these affairs, but this will be a completely different challenge all together, now that Humphries is ranked number one in the world after his World Championship success.

Wright’s darts have, quite simply, not been going where he wants as of late. His short appearance on Night 1 saw him go treble-less, with a three-dart average of only 83.78. There isn’t much to be previewed in this game, as we can only see one winner. Luke Humphries Win Match, Highest Match Checkout and Most 180s at an enhanced price of 6/5 seems the most realistic outcome.

This should be a very entertaining evening of darts with some intense duals at the oche. Could it be the night where Luke Littler wins his first night of Premier League darts? He is 10/3 to do so.
