Sunday night sees a thrilling fixture between two of La Liga’s big boys as Atletico Madrid host Barcelona in a game between fourth and first.
Only three points separate the teams so Diego Simeone will be keen to close the gap to the Catalan giants. We preview the best bets from the massive fixture at the Wanda Metropolitano.
The red and white side of Madrid haven’t performed badly by any stretch this season, but have struggled to replace Antoine Griezmann after he left in the summer for Barcelona. They have scored just 16 times in 14 fixtures, and have drawn more times than they have won.
Just the singular loss is a positive, but we have known for a while now that Simeone’s side are very hard to beat. Alvaro Morata is responsible for the lion’s share of their goals, and no other player has scored more than two.
Atletico are the underdogs for Sunday’s game at 9/5, but it would take a brave person to bet against Simeone’s side at home, even if they are playing Barcelona.
It’s been a strange season for Barcelona so far, who top La Liga but only by virtue of goal difference over arch-rivals Real Madrid. The Catalan side have scored a league-leading 35 goals, inspired by the three-headed giant of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Griezmann, but have also lost three times, the joint-most of any side in the top five.
Barca are at times still too reliant on Messi, but young midfielder Frenkie de Jong continues to grow in influence, and this team could have a very exciting future. Barca are 8/5 to win at the Wanda Metropolitano, but more safety could be found in Barcelona and draw no bet, available at 4/5.
Griezmann in the goals?
Griezmann returns to his old club on Sunday after a highly acrimonious summer transfer. Atletico moved on quickly, spending over £100 million on Joao Felix, but clearly they miss the Frenchman’s influence. The ex-Atletico favourite is 16/5 to score anytime, and in these fixtures we regularly see old favourites return to haunt their former teams.
