With the 2019-20 Bundesliga season having returned with a bang, we’ve taken a look at some of the best players that are currently lighting up the division.
Robert Lewandowski – Bayern Munich
When you think of the Bundesliga over the last few seasons, you think of Robert Lewandowski almost instantaneously. Like a fine wine, Lewandowski just keeps getting better and better with age and the 2019-20 season has proven this.
The Polish international has put the ball in the back of the net 27 times in 25 appearances, making him the top scorer in the Bundesliga yet again and the joint-highest in Europe’s big five leagues. To add to that, earlier this season, Lewandowski moved into third place in the Bundesliga’s highest ever goalscorers list, moving ahead of his former Bayern Munich boss Jupp Heynckes.
Lewandowski is the man Bayern are counting on to get them across the line to win yet another Bundesliga title this season – for what would be their eighth on the bounce – and you’d back him to do just that.
Jadon Sancho – Borussia Dortmund
Since joining Borussia Dortmund in 2017 from Manchester City, Jadon Sancho has shown the world that he is destined for greatness. With over 80 appearances now for Borussia Dortmund he is a vital member of their side, and the 2019-20 has been a real breakout season for the talented Englishman.
Sancho has made 26 appearances in the Bundesliga this term and returned 14 goals, making him the third highest goalscorer in the league. And not only can the starlet score goals but he has also managed to reach 16 assists this season, just one off Thomas Muller, who leads the Bundesliga charts.
Sancho’s impressive season has led to numerous clubs in England reportedly fighting it out for his signature and it would not be a surprise to see a side snap him up for a rather hefty sum later this year.
Timo Werner – RB Leipzig
Following a stunning season to date at RB Leipzig, Timo Werner has arguably been the best player in the Bundesliga over the last ten months. Werner has scored 24 goals and notched seven assists in 27 games this season and also boasts the best shot-to-goal-ratio in the league for a striker.
The German international has caused a stir in recent weeks after announcing that he wants to play in the Premier League next, with a string of clubs reportedly lining up for his signature. Werner has been strongly linked with Liverpool, with fellow German Jurgen Klopp said to be very keen on securing his services.
Erling Haaland – Borussia Dortmund
Erling Haaland is the hottest player in Europe at the moment. Since moving from RB Salzburg to Dortmund in January, the Norwegian has found the back of the net ten times in ten appearances, with the standout moment coming against Augsburg where he netted a 23-minute hat-trick on his debut for the German giants.
Haaland, who is the Champions League’s second top scorer this season behind Lewandowski, has continued his brilliant form since returning for the end of the season with an excellent outing against Schalke.
Due to Haaland’s attitude to life and his ice-cool finishing, he has been handed the nickname ‘The Terminator’ by Dortmund fans, and it’s hard to disagree with them on that one.
Kai Havertz – Bayer Leverkusen
Kai Havertz has been overshadowed by other rising stars this season, but in recent weeks the German maestro has taken the league by storm.
The attacking midfielder has scored a brace two weeks running, taking his goal tally for the season to double figures, which is even more impressive due to the fact that he is in a Bayer Leverkusen side that, on occasion, struggles to find the back of the net.
Havertz, like Sancho, has drawn reported interest from many English sides, with Liverpool and Chelsea both said to be keen, and if he keeps it up he too may earn a big-money move to the Premier League.
