Champions League: The story so far

Six group-stage rounds were played between September 14th and December 8th, 2021, with the top two teams in each of the eight groups progressing to the knockout stages.

Four English sides, Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea, started the competition and all four managed to progress from their respective groups.

Liverpool emerged from a potentially tough group with six wins from six games, scoring 17 goals and conceding just seven. Bayern Munich and Ajax were the only other teams that managed to make it through their groups undefeated.

Last season’s finalists, Man City, also topped their group despite defeats in two of their six games, to PSG and RB Leipzig.

Man United endured a difficult passage to the last 16, but still managed to top Group F after a win over Atalanta and two defeats of their nearest group rivals Villarreal.

Champions League holders Chelsea came through the group stages with the minimum of fuss but missed out on top spot in Group H to Juventus.

They all go on to meet their next opponents in the last 16.

When and where are the Champions League last 16 ties being played?

Champions League: Latest betting odds

Man City are currently favourites at 11/4 to go one better than last year and win a first Champions League. Pep Guardiola’s side have been given what looks a favourable last 16 draw against Sporting Lisbon, and they are strong 2/7 favourites to begin with an away win in their first leg.

Liverpool are the next English side in the betting as current third favourites at 5/1 to lift the trophy for a seventh time, something only AC Milan and Real Madrid have achieved. The Reds have been less fortunate with the draw, however, as they face last season’s Serie A champions Inter Milan. The betting is tight ahead of the first leg at the San Siro with Liverpool 21/20 favourites, although Jurgen Klopp’s men are still firm 2/9 favourites to make the quarter-finals.

Chelsea are 15/2 to defend their title. Despite finishing second in their group the Blues have landed a favourable last 16 draw against French side Lille. They play their first leg at Stamford Bridge on February 22nd and given their odds of 2/9, it would be a surprise if they didn’t come to qualify for the next round.

Since their loss in the 2011 final to Barcelona, Man United have only managed to advance past the last 16 twice, and their price of 18/1 to win the competition reflects that. They face a tough draw against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid side and are the 2/1 underdogs to achieve a positive result when they play their first leg in the Spanish capital. However, the Red Devils are still favourites to qualify at 8/13.

English sides look set to dominate the competition once again and occupy three of the first four teams in the market. Bayern Munich are the only non-Premier League side in the top four, with the German champions currently 7/2 second favourites to go all the way.

PSG are a 9/1 chance to record a first Champions League success, while Ajax, undefeated in their group, are 14/1. European heavy weights Real Madrid are priced at 18/1, with two-time winners Juventus a 25/1 chance.
