Champions League Preview: European giants vulnerable in final group games

| BY News Team

Here we are, the final round of the 2021/22 Champions League group stages and there is still so much to play for across Europe.

Will Milan make it through to the last 16? Will Chelsea top the group? and will Barcelona go out in the group stages?

We take a look at the standout fixtures here…

AC Milan v Liverpool

Liverpool have secured top spot in their Champions League group but AC Milan have everything still to play for with the Italian side currently sitting in third place on four points while Porto sit in second on five points, but can they upset Liverpool and sneak into the last 16?

This will be the fourth meeting between Milan and Liverpool in the Champions League. Both sides have won a game each with the draw coming in the miraculous 2005 Final. Milan are priced as 21/20 favourites going into this fixture. Ex-Arsenal and Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has scored eight career goals against Liverpool across all competitions and is priced at 11/8 to find the back of the net yet again on Tuesday evening.

Liverpool have won all five of their games in the competition this season and could become the first English team to win every game in the group stage of a Champions League campaign. The Reds head into this fixture as 12/5 underdogs. Mo Salah has scored six goals already in the competition this season and he has only scored more than this in a single campaign once before in 2017-18 where he scored 10. The Egyptian King is 6/5 to score anytime.

Zenit v Chelsea

Last time out, Chelsea demolished Juventus at Stamford Bridge whilst Zenit were held to a 1-1 draw at the hands of Malmo. Chelsea have confirmed their last 16 spot but they will be looking for all three points to confirm top position in the group.

Chelsea have won each of their three away games against Russian opponents with their last win being a 4-0 victory against Krasnodar. As expected, Thomas Tuchel’s side head into this fixture as 8/15 favourites. Since Thomas Tuchel took over Chelsea, no player has scored more goals for the German manager than Mason Mount. With goals in back-to-back games, Mason Mount is now priced at 17/10 to score anytime on Wednesday.

Zenit have won their previous two games in which they have hosted an English side with their last victory coming against Liverpool in the Europa League in 2013. The Russian outfit are priced at a strong 10/1 to defeat the Blues. Artem Dzyuba has scored nine goals for Zenit in the competition throughout his career and the leading striker is priced at 23/10 to make it double figures on Wednesday.

Bayern Munich v Barcelona

This fixture is one of the games of the week due to the fact that Barcelona are in danger of exiting the competition. If Barcelona fail to defeat Bayern and Benfica defeat Dynamo Kiev, Benfica will progress into the last 16 of the competition at the expense of Barcelona.

Bayern have won each of their last three meetings with Barcelona in European competition which is the longest run of victories a side has ever managed against Barcelona in European Cup history. Bayern are priced at 8/11 to make it four victories in a row this week. Robert Lewandowski has scored in each of his last nine appearances for Bayern in the competition and could become only the second player in the competition’s history to score in 10 consecutive games. The Polish striker is 2/5 to score anytime.

Barcelona have only lost two of their last 13 away games against German opposition, but these two defeats came at the hands of Bayern in 2013 and 2015. Barcelona are currently 3/1 underdogs going into this fixture. Memphis Depay is yet to score in the Champions League for Barcelona, but could he do it on Wednesday evening at the Allianz? The Dutchman is priced at 11/10 to find the net.
