Champions League Matchday 6 preview: Can Spurs join the rest of the English sides in the knockout stages?

| BY News Team

A tumultuous group D sees Tottenham on the verge of qualification, but all four teams are still in with a chance of making it through.

We preview the key fixtures in what will be an exciting end to the group stages below.

Marseille v Tottenham

Perhaps the biggest match of the final round of Champions League group-stage games as far as English fans are concerned: Tottenham take on Marseille at the Stade Velodrome and will hope they can reproduce their last-minute heroics of last week, though this time maybe from an onside position.

The north London giants travel to France with their slight points advantage in the group, coming into this tie as the 13/10 favourites to take a victory and therefore progress as the Group D winners.

Popping up every few seasons as a threat in the Champions League, Spurs have one of the best sides they have produced in the last decade and, combined with a great start in the Premier League, should take great confidence into this fixture.

Tottenham to win, Harry Kane to score and over two goals in the match was 15/4 but is now 5/1 with enhanced odds and is a great opportunity, alongside Son Heung-min to score first also enhanced at 7/1.

A #YourOdds proving to be popular is Harry Kane and Son Heung-min to register over three shots on target combined in the match at 6/4, something that will surely materialise if the two turn up in good form on the day.

Sporting v Frankfurt

Sporting v Frankfurt is the other match in Group D and may greatly impact the outlook of the knockout stages. Sitting in second and third in the group, just behind Spurs, the sides are effectively in a playoff to determine who makes it through to the round of 16.

It will no doubt be a fiercely fought battle, and going off the incredible Champions League matches we experienced last season, it might just serve up the pure drama we have come to expect.

Sporting are the 13/10 favourites, and Frankfurt are only slightly behind in the betting at 2/1. It has all the ingredients to be a classic and almost certainly will be a close game with the most likely score 1-1, priced at 11/2.

Sporting’s biggest threat will come from Pedro Goncalves, who is 4/1 to nick the first goal in the tie and favourite at 8/5 to score at any time. His opposite number Randal Kolo Muani is most likely get on the scoresheet first for Frankfurt at 11/2 and is 12/5 to find the net.

Sporting have attracted a lot of betting as the favourites, and with enhanced odds, the Portuguese side are 4/1 to win by two or more goals. It is unlikely, though, that Frankfurt will roll over, and at 4/6 for both teams to score, this will be an unpredictable one.

Manchester City v Sevilla

Despite only showing their absolutely best football in glimpses so far this season, Manchester City look to have already done enough to top Group G, likely even in the case of what would be a very surprising loss to the side holding 18th place in La Liga.

Pep Guardiola’s side are one of the few sides yet to lose in this season’s competition, and based on the consistency they have shown in the league so far in 2022/23, they will likely be comfortable winners of the tie.

The English champions are 2/9 to emerge victorious, and the value betting will likely come down to how many they will win by and who will get on the scoresheet. Looking at City’s recent scores, they have conceded much more than Pep will be happy with, so 10/11 for both teams to score could be a good option.

Even if City don’t turn up with their shooting boots on, Sevilla are likely to struggle and could be in for another rout at the hands of the Champions League trophy hopefuls. The odds for the match to feature more than 3.5 goals is only 2/1, and for Man City to score in both halves is certainly an attractive option at 8/11.
