EFL Championship Ball

Dubbed as one of the hardest leagues to get out of, the Championship always poses a fascinating battle at the top and bottom throughout the football season.

Many sides who may have once aspired to reach the Premier League or even found themselves as established sides in the league at one point, could now find themselves in a relegation scrap in England’s second division.

Let’s look at the likeliest contenders for the drop in the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday – 1/12

It’s been a difficult start to the campaign for both sides in Sheffield, however the far likelier team to face the drop are Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls have had to endure a tough period in 2025, with several of the club’s experienced players, including top scorer Josh Windass, leaving due to financial issues, which saw their salary payments delayed or unpaid. As a result of this, the EFL have imposed sanctions on the club which sees them restricted in the transfer window, which has a big impact on the club’s recruitment.

There is a big debt hanging over the club, seeing potential points deductions loom which would surely put the nail in the coffin when it comes to staying in the league, hence the very short price.

That said, they have boasted a better start to the season than their city counterparts, Sheffield United, who have lost all six games so far this season. It couldn’t have been a worse start for the Blades, with manager Ruben Selles already sacked. They’re 8/1 to be relegated, and if the returning Chris Wilder can’t steady the ship, that may look a big price down the line.

Oxford United – 10/11

The other team joining Sheffield Wednesday at the mark of odds on for relegation is Oxford Utd.

Promoted from League One via the play-offs two seasons ago, it’s seemed a tall order from day one for the U’s to stay in the league, but they managed it last season.

They haven’t had the best of starts, when losing their opening fixtures to Birmingham and Hull, however since they have managed draws against Leicester and Coventry before getting their first win on the board against Bristol City.

If they can keep nicking draws against the bigger sides and even winning, they will give themselves a fighting chance, however their gulf in quality may eventually tell over the long Championship campaign.

Other relegation candidates

The rest of the market sees 11 sides priced at 10/1 or lower, evidencing just how competitive the Championship relegation fight could be.

At prices of 6/1 and 7/1, Hull and Wrexham could find themselves in a scrap to avoid the drop at the business end.

Both sides have managed to win two games out of their five, but have done so conceding 12 goals, with just the three teams currently in the drop zone boasting a similar defensive record.

They must improve their defensive output to keep them away from the drop, and both sides look fair prices to take in what should be a fascinating season at the bottom of the Championship.
