Football fans always know the start of the new season isn’t far away when the Community Shield takes place, with last term’s Premier League champions Liverpool taking on FA Cup winners Arsenal at Wembley on Saturday.

Here is our look ahead to the 2020/21 season curtain-raiser.

Gunners looking to build on encouraging finish

Although Arsenal fans wouldn’t have been happy with their side’s eighth-place finish in the league last season, they will have been ecstatic to have won the FA Cup – their first trophy since 2017. New manager, Mikel Arteta, has certainly made a difference and with Willian joining from Chelsea this summer, they look to have a more than handy attack ahead of the start of the new season.

Star man and captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looks close to agreeing a new contract, which will be music to the Gunners supporters’ ears as he looks vital to Arteta’s plans moving forward. The Gabonese forward, who scored 28 goals in all competitions last season, is 9/2 to score first on Saturday, while he’s 13/10 to score anytime.

Arsenal have only played once in pre-season so far, a comfortable 4-1 victory over MK Dons, and they’ll be hoping to keep up the momentum from the end of the 2019/20 campaign here. They are 15/4 for victory in 90 minutes, while Arteta’s team are 7/4 to lift the trophy.

World and Premier League champions hoping for more of the same

Few will argue that it’s been a pretty golden couple of seasons for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool. Having lifted the Champions League trophy for a sixth time in 2019, the Reds then went on to become world champions later that year before cruising to a first Premier League title in 30 years.

There’s no doubt that Klopp’s team were streets ahead of the others, particularly in the league, last season, but as we all know it’s one thing to win the title, and it’s another to retain it. 18 points is a big margin to overcome, but with all of Liverpool’s rivals clearly looking to strengthen significantly, it won’t be an easy to task to win it again, that’s for sure.

Klopp has kept the purse strings largely dry for now with Kostas Tsimikas their only new addition, but rumours continue to circulate that Thiago Alcantara is the next name on the German’s summer shopping list. Thiago is 2/5 to join the Reds this summer and if they do splash the cash on the midfielder, it will be interesting to see how he fits into a Liverpool system which worked so well last season. If he were to sign, he’d surely set up plenty of opportunities for Liverpool’s star front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, who once again terrorised opposition defences last season. You can back all three players to score in 90 minutes against Arsenal at 11/1.

Given their dominance last season, it’s unsurprising that Liverpool are the red-hot favourites to win this one at 13/20, with the Merseysiders just 2/5 to lift the trophy.
