Community Shield 2022 Preview: Rivals look to set a precedent ahead of the new season

| BY News Team

Premier League champions Manchester City face FA Cup winners Liverpool in Saturday’s Community Shield, a match that is sure to give a guide to their prospects this season.

After battling it out relentlessly for an entire season, Man City and Liverpool were locked together until the end. Who will take the advantage into the 2022/23 season?

We preview the action ahead of the 2022 Community Shield at the King Power Stadium.

Man City and Liverpool: New faces set to impress?

Ending 2021/22 in very similar positions all round, both reaching the Champions League semi-final, the FA Cup semi and finishing the Premier League season within one point of each other, Man City and Liverpool will face off ahead of the 2022/23 season. Though the Community Shield is often dubbed a ‘novelty’ fixture, we are sure it won’t lack bite.

It will likely act as a marker of where the two teams are ahead of the season, will highlight how the new signings of the clubs have settled in and maybe even expose who has been working harder over the summer months.

It will be a vital game for several players on both sides. Jack Grealish will be keen to impress his legendary boss after a slightly underwhelming season that, by some accounts, failed to reach expectations. Players like Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones will be eager to assert their standing as regular starters amidst a number of summer departures.

Premier League new boys Darwin Nunez and Erling Haaland will surely feature with the managers looking to get them up to speed as quickly as possible. What better opposition to introduce them to elite English football?

We can expect a hotly contested battle between the two best teams in England, arguably the two best managers in the world and the two sides that, year after year, manage to exceed all expectations.

Another Wembley classic?

The two world heavyweights had excellent seasons in 2021/22 and will certainly plan to continue their momentum with a victory at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

City’s new signings and perhaps their ability to prevail on the final day of last season’s Premier League sees the Sky Blues as the favourites in the tie and the 11/8 favourites to lift the trophy.

Liverpool are only marginal underdogs and, at 15/8, aren’t far behind Guardiola’s men in the betting.

Last season’s Premier League golden boot winner, Mohamed Salah, is 29/20 to score at anytime, but Norwegian superstar Erling Haaland is shorter at Evens to bag his second goal for Manchester City, while he is 16/5 to open the scoring against the Reds.

We will likely be in for an exciting affair with both teams to score more likely than not at 8/13, and 1-1 the most likely score after 90 minutes at 11/2.

City’s star man Kevin De Bruyne will likely bring his magic touch after an impressive preseason, as will Liverpool’s Luis Diaz, who has shown signs of possessing the qualities required to succeed Sadio Mane. The City man is 15/8 to assist a goal in the tie, while Diaz is a 4/1 shot to thread a killer pass.
