England Women v Austria Women preview: England set for fast start to Euros campaign

| BY News Team

England look to assert their dominance on Group A as they take on Austria in the opening game of the Euros.

We preview the Lionesses’ first fixture to kick off the UEFA Women’s Euros.

Lionesses too good to lose?

England’s Women team are in unstoppable form, having gone unbeaten in their last 14 games including three 10-0 wins and one 20-0 win. One of those wins came against Austria in November last year, although it was a much tighter affair, with England winning 1-0.

The English side head out as the strong favourites at 1/5 and considering their current form with 30 goals in their last six matches, it is likely to be an exciting game of football. Get England to score four or more goals at 2/1.

England have the home advantage, and no doubt they will want to put on a spectacle for the cheering fans at Old Trafford on Wednesday night. To add to this, manager Sarina Weighman has proven that she can deliver, and will no doubt be looking for another flawless victory on her way to bring home the title for England. She credits her side’s strength to creating an environment in which all players feel valued.

If you fancy the Lionesses to go all the way and win the title, William Hill are currently offering a bet boost at odds of 5/1, making England second favourites behind Spain at 7/2.

A key player to watch is Manchester City’s Lauren Hemp, who recently became 2022 PFA Young Player of the Year for a fourth consecutive time, making her the first player to win four awards in the same category. Hemp is 6/1 to score two or more goals.

Austria face uphill battle

The Austrian Women’s team are coming into this game after back-to-back wins against Belgium and Montenegro, and with only one defeat in their last eight fixtures. The Austrian Women’s team joined the Euros for the first time in 2017, when making the semi-finals, but they are still relatively new to facing this calibre of opposition.

This could prove to be a tougher challenge than England’s previous matches as their last encounter saw England win only 1-0, much closer than many other of England’s matches recently. And if you fancy Austria to achieve the upset, Austria to win within 90 minutes is 14/1.

A key player to watch for Austria will be Nicole Billa, who has been on top form in the last season, scoring 12 goals in 21 games for TSG Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga. Billa is 12/1 to be first goal scorer or 7/2 to score anytime, making her the most likely goal threat for Austria.

Although Austria do have some good talent on the team, it will take all their effort to come away with a victory on Wednesday against the strongest looking England Women’s side in years.
