England Women v Norway Women: Lionesses look to maintain good start

| BY News Team

England Women face Norway in their second game of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 as they look to continue their perfect start to the competition.

We preview the Lionesses’ second fixture as they chase down their first major title.

Can the Lionesses make it two wins from two?

Starting the UEFA Women’s Euros with an unbeaten streak of 14 matches and having beaten world number four, the Netherlands, 5-1, as well as scoring a whopping 28 goals in only the previous six matches, England were always going to be one of the favourites.

Having never won a major tournament and ultimately falling short in all their previous attempts, England Women, led by Sarina Wiegman, are currently eighth in FIFA’s world rankings. However, with their experienced manager and winning form, the Lionesses are now favourites to win the Women’s Euros at 10/3.

Wiegman has cultivated a consistent winning formula among a young team and is guiding the girls to the pinnacle of what could be one of the most successful periods in the team’s history.

England are the 8/13 favourites in this fixture and despite a shaky start in their opening game with Austria, are expected to emerge victorious against Norway at the Brighton & Hove Community Stadium.

The regular victories of the England team and their manner of goalscoring over the last few weeks, sees the host nation at 4/9 to score the first goal.  Beth Mead was on the mark for the Lionesses in their first game against Austria, and is 2/1 to score at anytime here, while Ellen White is 11/8 get her first goal of the tournament.

The support they are receiving from the sell-out crowds will undoubtedly have a positive effect and England are given odds of only 13/8 to score in both halves.

Norway have potential to cause an upset

The 1995 World Cup winners won’t be daunted by playing the host nation, but come into this tie as underdogs at 19/5.

Probably the two best teams in the group, England and Norway, will be battling it out for the top spot and this game could well be the decider. Winning the Euros in both 1987 and 1993, Norway are no stranger to success and certainly know how to win a tournament. They are the seventh favourites (11/1) to walk away with the Euro 2022 trophy and go into the competition, like England, on the back of some great form including six wins on the bounce.

The world number 11 ranked side, Norway are well equipped with a squad of high quality players and if they approach the game right, could escape with a surprise result. They are 4/7 to score alongside England in the match, with a final score of  1-1, a likely occurrence priced at 13/2.

One of Norway’s top threats comes in the shape of Guro Reiten who scored twice to help her team come from behind to win 2-1 against Denmark in their final game before the Euros. Reiten was also on target in Norway’s 4-1 win over Northern Ireland, as they started the tournament in style, and is 9/2 to add another goal in this fixture. Norway’s main threat could prove to be Lyon striker Ada Hegerberg who is just 12/5 to score against the Lionesses.
