Euro 2024 – Who will be the surprise?

| BY News Team

Germany kick off Euro 2024 on Friday 14th June as they face Scotland at the Allianz Arena. They’re looking to end a 30-year Euros drought in their home tournament, but however face tough competition from several strong nations.

Who could spring a shock in the Euro 2024 market this year?

Belgium – 16/1

Without doubt, Belgian fans will be disappointed not to have made more of a mark in major competitions during this ‘Golden Generation’, which has seen several of their players playing at some of the best clubs in Europe.

A group stage exit from the 2022 World Cup came as a shock and will surely put the fire under their senior players, who may feel this is one of their last chances to take international glory. Kevin De Bruyne is the 10/1 market leader in the most assists market for the tournament and will look to link up with Romelu Lukaku, an 18/1 shot for top goal scorer, in what looks a weak Group E.

The blend of experience throughout the squad in Jan Vertonghen, De Bruyne and Lukaku mixed with younger talent coming through such as Amadou Onana, Jeremy Doku – who’s 16/1 for UEFA young player of the tournament – and Johan Bakayoko encourages enthusiasm about the chances of the Belgians. If they carry their unbeaten form from qualification into the competition and win Group E, as is expected, 16/1 will look big come the knockout stages.

Croatia – 40/1

Croatia must be too big a price at 40/1. Though they endured an unsuccessful campaign in the previous Euros, their record in the last two World Cups means they must be considered a threat in Germany this time around.

They continue to take scalps on the world stage, most notably Brazil in the 2022 World Cup quarter finals where they came back in extra time to win on penalties, where now Fenerbahce keeper Dominik Livaković was the hero saving a crucial penalty to win the tie. He likely lines up here in a steely side that are hard to break down, with an evergreen Luka Modrić off the back of his sixth Champions League success and a 66/1 chance for UEFA Player of the Tournament. If Croatia are to reach the latter rounds in Germany this time around, he would surely be at the heart of it.

Group B looks a tough assignment, but Croatia have the tools to come through it and once again outrun their odds in international competitions.

Denmark – 40/1

Denmark are the only side in our list to have previously won the European Championship. Whilst that was 32 years ago, there are reasons to be enthused about the chances of the Danes this time around too. They were semi-finalists in the 2020 Euros, taking England to extra time at Wembley and just falling short. Since then, they have retained a similar core to that of the team that took them so far into the knockout stages, whilst adding some firepower in Manchester United striker Rasmus Højlund, who is 33/1 to be top scorer in the tournament.

Granted, it was a very disappointing showing in the 2022 World Cup, where they bowed out in the group stage scoring just one goal, but they have since brought a goal scorer in Højlund into the setup and are 1/3 to qualify from their group. That may well be exactly what they need to propel them into the latter stages of Euro 2024. If so, 40/1 is a good price for a team that tend to perform well in the knockout stages of European competition.
