FA Cup Final Preview: Chelsea and Liverpool fight for domestic supremacy

| BY News Team

After already battling it out at Wembley once this season, the two European giants go head-to-head again. Will Chelsea get revenge and spoil Liverpool’s chance of a third treble?

With the 2022 FA Cup final on the horizon, we preview only the second ever FA Cup final between Chelsea and Liverpool.

Chelsea and Liverpool: the season so far

In what has been one of the most exciting Premier League campaigns in recent times, Chelsea’s early season form has tailed off, while Liverpool are still in with a chance of the title.

Though the Liverpool faithful are undoubtedly over the moon, with their consistently scintillating form producing a Carabao Cup trophy and third Champions League final appearance in only five seasons, the chase for top spot in the Premier League is appearing to be one bridge too far as City only look to be stepping on the gas after their breath-taking Champions League semi-final disappointment.

Chelsea have had their fair share of difficulties with a change in ownership leading to a slightly unstable period for the club, and perhaps contributing to a poor run of results, which has ultimately seen them drop out of the title race. A loss to Liverpool in the Carabao cup final further dampened the mood in a slightly disappointing season for the Blues.

Regardless of how the season has panned out in other competitions, both teams have played fantastic football at times and proved to us how much domestic glory means to them in a goalless, but exciting contest in the Carabao Cup final in February.

A dramatic 120 minutes of football and a penalty shootout that involved every player on the pitch taking a shot, finally came to an end with the substitute Kepa, skying the 22nd penalty of the evening and handing Liverpool their record ninth victory in the tournament.

The FA Cup offers a one-off chance for Liverpool to lift more silverware and for Chelsea to bag their first of the season.

Could we be in for similar drama on Saturday?

Another classic Wembley final?

Both Chelsea and Liverpool have a strong history in the FA Cup having won eight and seven titles respectively and featuring in 16 and 15 finals since the first affair in 1871.

This year marks the first football competition’s 150th anniversary and is a repeat of the 2012 final, when Chelsea beat Liverpool 2-1 after goals from Didier Drogba and Ramires.

This will be the fourth meeting of the season between the two teams with all the fixtures finishing level so a draw in 90 minutes is certainly on the cards and is priced at 5/2.

Liverpool come into the final as firm favourites however, at 1/2, while Chelsea are priced at 13/8 to lift the trophy. A repeat of the Carabao Cup final and either side winning on penalties is priced at 11/1.

Kai Havertz, whose performances have slightly dipped in the second half of the season, is still likely to score at 8/1 to be the first goal scorer and 21/10 to score at any time.

Christian Pulisic, Chelsea’s only scorer in the FA Cup Final in 2019/20, is 14/5 to score at any time while Sadio Mane, who scored twice against City in the semi-final, is 5/1 to be the first goal-scorer.
