Which teams are in the running to drop out of the Champions League?
Some elite teams are at serious risk of failing to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages ahead of matchday four. Backing them to win the Europa League before their fates are certain brings an opportunity to snare odds that could look very generous should they enter the competition.
Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and Liverpool are among the potential UCL dropouts already fitted up with Europa League outright betting prices by the William Hill traders.
Below, we examine the relative merits of backing each of them to lift the continent’s second-tier trophy in 2018/19.
PSG to win the Europa League odds – 7/1
Group C’s biggest financial fish are third in Group C with four points, having conceded twice as many goals as Liverpool and three times as many as Napoli.
Having failed to beat the Italians in the French capital, there’s every chance they’ll lose in Naples, where Liverpool have already come a cropper, while their defensive generosity means Jurgen Klopp’s men will be very hopeful of taking something from their trip to the Parc des Princes.
Experts at beating up on lesser teams courtesy of their domestic exploits, Les Parisiens would surely be red-hot favourites should they end up in the UEL when hostilities resume in February.
Man Utd to win the Europa League odds – 20/1
Like Thomas Tuchel’s men, the Reds are on four points. Unlike them they are at least in second place in their group at present, but tomorrow’s visit to Turin is likely to yield precisely zero points.
Juventus haven’t lost a home Champions League game since going down 0-2 to eventual winners Bayern Munich in April 2013 and they’ve won 13 of their 14 matches this season.
United could go into their final game of the section, away to Valencia, needing a victory to progress and they’ve failed to win two of their last three away games in the competition at the time of writing.
Having won the Europa League under Jose Mourinho just two seasons ago, anyone holding on to a 20/1 bet on the Red Devils will be the envy of their friends if they enter the competition at the last-32 stage.
Liverpool to win the Europa League odds – 33/1
The Reds are in a better position to qualify for the knockout stages than the first two sides listed, but that’s reflected in their price.
Tonight’s away game at Crvena Zvezda could be a surprisingly tough test after Napoli were held in Serbia and the Italians’ subsequent visit to Anfield is no guarantee of points.
The away trip to Paris is likely to prove pivotal and PSG almost got a point out of them on Merseyside despite being off-colour throughout.
As last year’s Champions League finalists, 33/1 about Liverpool winning the Europa League would represent stupendous value if they wound up in the competition, which, in such an open group, could still very easily happen.
