League Cup: The story so far

The League Cup, also known as the EFL Cup and the Carabao Cup for sponsorship reasons, started off with 92 clubs competing that sit within the top four levels of the English football league system – the Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two. Following Chelsea’s victory over Spurs last week, we are down to the final three sides with Liverpool and Arsenal battling it out on Thursday evening in the second-leg of their tie. Currently the two sides are level after a goalless draw at Anfield.

The 2021-22 edition of the League Cup has witnessed a number of upsets with last year’s League Cup winners Manchester City being eliminated by West Ham on penalties in the fourth round. The Hammers’ victory ended Pep Guardiola’s side’s hopes of winning a fifth-straight League Cup. Liverpool played out a thriller in the quarter-finals as they defeated Leicester City on penalties to reach the final four. Chelsea cruised past Spurs 3-0 in the semi-finals as Thomas Tuchel reached his third final in just under a year as Chelsea manager.

When and where are the League Cup semi-finals?

The original League Cup schedule was set to see both ties conclude last week. However, due to Liverpool and Arsenal’s first leg postponement, only Chelsea and Tottenham played both their ties.

Tottenham and Chelsea played their second leg match on Wednesday 12th January in which Chelsea came out victorious. Liverpool and Arsenal played out their first leg on Thursday 13th January and following a goalless draw both sides are due to meet for their second leg tie on Thursday 20th January.

League Cup: Latest betting odds

Chelsea looked assured in their tie against Tottenham, running out 3-0 victors. That result saw them storm into favouritism to win the tournament, and they are now priced at 5/6 to lift the trophy.

Following their impressive defensive performance at Anfield in the first leg, Arsenal are now 12/5 to win the second leg in 90 minutes. Although they have a good chance of reaching the final, Mikel Arteta’s side are third favourites at 10/3 to win the whole competition.

Liverpool are considered as the second-favourites for the tournament, with Jurgen Klopp’s team priced at 15/8 to win their first League Cup since 2012. However, Liverpool will be without star players Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah as they participate in the Africa Cup of Nations. The Red’s are priced at EVENS to win on Thursday night.
