Manchester United v Liverpool preview: Liverpool to compound United’s woes

| BY News Team

Liverpool have failed to win and Manchester United sit at the bottom on zero points. Will the two Premier League heavyweights come out all guns blazing at Old Trafford in a bid to get their season started, or will it be a tepid and nervous affair?

We preview the action from two of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Can one of them make amends?

Bottom of the league for first time in 30 years

For a few years Manchester United have been the laughingstock of the Premier League. Their decline after the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson was predicted and expected, as it would be if arguably the best Premier League manager of all time left David Moyes as his successor.

Moyes was never going to recreate the heights of his fellow countryman who had won 13 Premier League titles with the Red Devils. However, it was never expected just how drastically United’s decline would be, to the point that they are now bottom of the league for the first time since 1992 and on zero points with a minus-five goal difference.

On Monday, they take on a Liverpool side who have experienced contrasting fortunes in recent years and been one of the best teams in Europe ever since Jurgen Klopp’s take over. It’s unsurprising then that, United head into the fixture as the heavy underdogs at 4/1.

Over the last two seasons, United have signed Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho, who was tipped by many as one of England’s best young talents. The two forwards have easily got the capability to play for the best teams in the world but find themselves as the fourth and 16th favourites to score first  at 5/1 and 16/1, respectively.

Due to the poor performances of United’s defence this season so far, the game is expected to be a high scorer, and at 5/4 for the match to feature over 3.5 goals, we could be in for another thrashing of the Red Devils. They lost 5-0 and 4-0 to Liverpool in the league last season.

Liverpool’s worst start under Klopp

Liverpool have begun the 2022/23 season with two draws from two having come up against Fulham and Crystal Palace, two sides they would have usually expected to beat. It isn’t a catastrophe by any means, but the Reds are four points behind Manchester City, and if they are planning on pushing for the title this season, they have a lot of ground to make up already..

Despite the worst start in the league Liverpool have made under Jurgen Klopp, they are the favourites to win this one and add to Manchester United’s woes at 4/7. In what would be their fourth league win over United in a row, Liverpool are expected to go out guns blazing and are 10/3 to score three or more goals.

Given the failings of United’s strikers, the Reds are also given good odds to keep a clean sheet at 13/8 and could score in both halves at 11/10.

Mohamed Salah is 3/1 to score break the deadlock, and is only 4/5 to score at any time in the tie. If Liverpool and Salah turn up, it could be a long afternoon for United with a Liverpool win of 3-0 priced at 12/1.
