Race for the Premier League and Champions League Golden Boots

| BY News Team

With Premier League and Champions League football approaching the business end of the season, it’s not long until the respective Golden Boots for each competition will be handed out.

Ahead of the 2022 season finale, we take a look at the favourites for both the Premier League and Champions League top scorer markets.

Premier League

Mohamed Salah – 1/8

Mohamed Salah unsurprisingly leads the betting for the Premier League Golden Boot. Salah last picked up this award in the 2018/19 season, netting 22 goals to share the gong with Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane and former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Egypt international has found the net 20 times in the league so far this season, which is more than any other Premier League player. However, he’s recently been enduring a six-game drought across all competitions for Liverpool, which has left him goalless since scoring against Brighton on March 12. Nevertheless, he remains three goals clear at the top of the charts and is the 1/8 favourite to see it out and take home a third Golden Boot.

Son-Heung Min – 6/1

Son-Heung Min is very much still in the running for the Golden Boot at 6/1. Not long ago it was considered inconceivable that anyone could challenge Salah this season, but Son’s hat-trick against Aston Villa has very much thrown it up into the air. The South Korea international has netted 17 Premier League goals this season and continues to be a match winner to help keep Antonio Conte’s side in contention for a top-four finish. It is worth noting that Son has also actually scored more non-penalty goals than Salah this season.

Diogo Jota – 18/1

Sitting next in line in the Premier League goals charts this season is Liverpool’s Diogo Jota, who has racked up 15. What is more impressive is that many of those efforts have been crucial goals for Liverpool. Jota is a well-rounded and hugely versatile forward who is capable of playing all three positions up front and out wide, so he gives Jurgen Klopp many different options which has proved invaluable. The Portuguese attacker has built on his maiden Reds campaign to sit joint-third in this term’s Premier League goal-scoring charts, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, and he is 18/1 to take home the Golden Boot.

Champions League

Robert Lewandowski – 8/11

Goals-wise it’s been another campaign to remember for Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, who leads the goalscoring charts not just in the Bundesliga but also for the Champions League. He currently sits top in the Champions League with 13 goals in 10 games, but unfortunately for Lewandowski, his goal against Villarreal in the quarter-finals was not enough to help Bayern progress to the semi-finals. This means his fate is no longer in his hands, and he will be relying on either a drop in form for Karim Benzema or a semi-final exit for Real Madrid. That said, Lewandowski remains the 8/11 favourite to win the Champions League Golden Boot.

Karim Benzema – Evs

Hat-tricks against PSG and Chelsea have helped propel Karim Benzema towards the top of the Champions League goalscoring leaderboard, where he sits with 12 goals to his name, just one shy of Lewandowski’s total. Benzema has been integral to Real Madrid during arguably his best ever season at the club. With 25 league goals to his name, he also leads the La Liga goalscoring charts. Benzema, who’s scored seven in his last three Champions League games, will need another couple across the two semi-final legs against Manchester City, and potentially in the final, in order to take home the prize outright. He’s currently Evens to do so.

Mohamed Salah – 25/1

While it has been a highly impressive season for Mohamed Salah, his eight-goal Champions League tally will require building upon if he is to be considered a serious rival to Benzema and Lewandowski for the Champions League Golden Boot. As a result, he is currently 25/1 to win the award. However, with arguably the easiest semi-final fixture of the lot for Liverpool against Villarreal, Salah will be hopeful of racking up some more goals and getting through to the final.
