Manchester United: Worst ever season

Ollie Watkins to Manchester United

Manchester United’s struggles since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club have been well-documented, but the 2024/25 season could just be their worst ever.

Below we discuss United’s downfall over the past decade and whether they have reached their lowest point in recent history under Ruben Amorim.

United in 2024/25

First we’ll take a look at how Ruben Amorim’s side are getting on this season. Currently they sit 14th in the Premier League, having picked up just 33 points from 27 games. Those points have come via nine wins, six draws, and 12 losses.

Their goal difference of -6 doesn’t make for good reading, with the Red Devils averaging just one goal per game, conceding 39 in the process. The six-goal tally reached by both Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo are enough to make them United’s joint top scorers in the league this season, while at the other end of the pitch André Onana has kept seven clean sheets.

Cup competitions have been the only things keeping the Old Trafford faithful happy in recent years, with their side winning the 2022/23 Carabao Cup and 2023/24 FA Cup. Although they’re already out of the Carabao Cup this year, their FA Cup dream lives on, and they still have a European road ahead of them.

They find themselves through to the last 16 of the Europa League and winning that competition is their only viable route to Champions League football next season.

It’s safe to say the success of Amorim’s first half-season in charge rests solely on their performance in the FA Cup and Europa League – and their ability to avoid relegation.

Worst post-Fergie season?

After Sir Alex bowed out off the back of a title win in the 2012/13 season, United have failed to hit those heights again. That said, things have never been as bad for them in the league as they are right now. Their league finishes since Fergie’s departure read: 7th, 4th, 5th, 6th, 2nd, 6th, 3rd, 2nd, 6th, 3rd, 8th. A far cry from the 14th position they sit in now.

In those 11 seasons, United have gone trophyless on seven occasions, with two FA Cups, two League Cups and one Europa League to show for the other four. While they still have two trophy chances this season, they aren’t favourites for either competition. They are currently 8/1 to win the FA Cup, with Manchester City the 7/4 favourites, while they’re 6/1 for the Europa League behind Tottenham at 4/1.

Worse season… ever?

Whether this is going to be the worst season in the history of the club is another question, which depends on how far back you are willing to go. United finished 13th in the 1989/90 season, one spot higher than their current position. You have to go back to 1973/74 for their worst season in the top flight, when they finished 21st and were relegated to the second tier.

Given the size of the club now, the wages of their current squad and transfer fees spent, a 14th-place finish and a trophyless campaign would certainly be among the worst seasons in the club’s 147-year history.
