Premier League preview: Can the fast starters continue their momentum?

Thomas Tuchel Chelsea Premier League

Premier League football is back and there were plenty of interesting stories on the opening weekend which make the next set of fixtures all the more intriguing.

As we all know, anyone can beat anyone in this English top-flight and there was further evidence of that in gameweek one with some surprising results, so it’s all set up for a fantastic match day two. Here’s our preview of some this weekend’s matches.

Chelsea v Tottenham

Despite a slightly tepid start to the season, Chelsea are the 5/4 favourites for this one, perhaps surprising given many have been impressed by Spurs’ progressive signings and fast start.

Opening the season in the worst way possible, Tottenham, who are 11/5 to win this match, went 1-0 down to a quality James Ward Prowse half-volley in the 12th minute, but their tenacious attitude which has developed under Antonio Conte saw Spurs rapidly turning the game around with two goals in each half to ease them to a 4-1 victory.

Chelsea does look to have a solid defence with new boy Kalidou Koulibaly, but the in-form and full of confidence Spurs attack will surely have a say in the matter. If Chelsea struggle to score from open play again, the fortune may fall with the team in white.

The fixture that has evolved into a fierce rivalry over the years could be a high scorer, with both teams to score more likely than not at 8/11.

Arsenal v Leicester

The side that narrowly missed out on Champions League football at the critical end of last season looks to have rebuilt after their disappointment and may prove to be a formidable force under Mikel Arteta in 2022/23.

Gabriel Jesus, the showpiece signing of the Gunners’ window, has started the season looking sharp and the tag of being his side’s main man up front, something he never had at Manchester City, seems sit well with the Brazilian. He is the favourite to find the net first at 3/1 and is 10/11 to score at any time.

Arsenal are the strong favourites at 4/9, with a 2-0 win already in the bag for the season, while Leicester, who finished eighth last season and have failed to bring in any notable signings this summer, are 6/1 to triumph.

Nottingham Forest v West Ham

Nottingham Forest host West Ham with both sides having lost their opening game. However, these are two teams that show great promise and having recruited well over the summer, look to have the potential to have successful campaigns.

Forest have arrived in the Premier League and signed over £100 million worth of players to aid them in their bid for survival, though they appear to still be bedding in and gelling with the rest of the side and are therefore are the underdogs at 17/5.

West Ham were the first victims of Erling Haaland’s lightning pace and Viking-like strength, succumbing 2-0 to City with the Norwegian netting both times. Though it can be said they didn’t play well, not many can outsmart a Pep Guardiola side that refuses to give the ball away.

Based on their results over the last two seasons, the Hammers are on an upward curve and, with the addition of two quality attackers in Gianluca Scamacca and Maxwel Cornet, are understandably 17/20 favourites to emerge victorious at the City Ground.

The match is 17/20 to feature more than 2.5 goals and is 18/5 to end in a draw.
