Premier League teams with the best Boxing Day records

| BY News Team

Boxing day football is staple of the British sporting calendar, and it can throw up some surprising results.

We have been through the past 10 seasons to dig out those teams with the best records on Boxing Day. Although the gameweek that covers the Boxing Day fixtures can sometimes spill over to the following days, we are solely concerned with how teams perform on the 26th December exclusively, leading to one surprising omission.

We take a look at the top five below which doesn’t include… Manchester United! The Red Devils have earned just 17 points on Boxing Day, unluckily scoring a further four on the 27th and 28th of December.

Manchester City – 18 points

Most Premier League fans will be used to seeing Manchester City at the top of the table, but when it comes to Boxing Day, the Cityzens don’t reign supreme and they find themselves at the bottom of our list with just 18 points, contextualised by the fact that they have played on Boxing Day in just seven of the past ten seasons.

In the past 10 seasons, City have won on six occasions. By far the most memorable of these victories was their nine-goal thriller against Leicester in 2021, in which City were victorious by a 6-3 scoreline, with a Raheem Sterling masterclass the talk of the match.

Liverpool – 19 points

Liverpool find themselves in joint-third on the list with 19 points, having racked up six wins and a draw from their eight Boxing Day matches in the last ten seasons.

The Reds certainly don’t mind a Boxing Day fixture, with their last loss coming all of 10 years ago, with Jurgen Klopp still yet to taste defeat on the 26th of December. Boxing Day 2019 was a big day at Anfield as they put four past Newcastle to take all three points in emphatic style, bettered only by their 5-0 over Swansea two years earlier.

Chelsea – 19 points

Chelsea also have 19 Boxing Day points to their name but, unlike Liverpool, have not enjoyed their festive football in recent years. The Blues have played on Boxing Day in nine of the last ten seasons, but have won just one of their last three.

Chelsea went on a six season undefeated streak from 2013 to 2018, the highlight of which saw a vintage display from the brilliant Eden Hazard as he dragged his side to a 2-1 win at Vicarage Road in 2018, netting both goals and picking up the Man of the Match award.

Arsenal – 20 points

Arsenal are the first team on our list to have broken the 20-point mark courtesy of their record of six wins and two draws across their nine Boxing Day matches, with their only loss coming via a 4-0 drubbing away at Southampton in 2015.

The Gunners have won all of their last three Boxing Day games, with their travelling supporters being treated to a Christmas cracker at Carrow Road in 2021 as they saw their side put five past Norwich, three of which were scored by Hale End graduates Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith-Rowe.

Tottenham – 21 points

Top of the tree with 21 points are Tottenham, who remain unbeaten in the past ten seasons, playing on Boxing Day nine times, winning six and drawing three of their games. Harry Kane has been their go-to goalscorer on the 26th and the Englishman holds the record for the most Boxing Day goals in the history of the Premier League with 10.

Spurs’ unbeaten record looked in serious danger last year as they found themselves 2-0 down away at Brentford, but Harry Kane netted his record-breaking goal early in the second half before Pierre-Emile Højbjerg put the ball past David Raya to keep their record intact. Unfortunately for Spurs fans, there is no trophy for Boxing Day wins, but it is an impressive record nonetheless.
