Premier League top assist makers of all time

Goals win games and strikers quite rightly receive the plaudits when their efforts earn their side all three points. However, it’s the men behind them that often play the biggest part in the build-up.

With the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Paul Pogba and Mateo Kovacic all creating a number of goals this season, it’s time to look back at the Premier League’s greatest assist makers.

Ryan Giggs – Manchester United – 162 assists

Oh how Manchester United could do with Premier League assist record holder Ryan Giggs right now. The Welshman is a Premier League legend and with 162 assists during his career, it’s no surprise to see just how much respect he still warrants in the memories of not just United fans, but neutrals up and down the country. Giggs boasts 51 more assists than second-placed Cesc Fabregas and it’s safe to say the Welshman won’t be caught by a rival anytime soon. In fact, with none of the top five still playing in England’s top flight, Giggs looks set to reign supreme with the most assists in Premier League history for a long time yet.

Cesc Fabregas – Arsenal & Chelsea – 111 assists

Second in the list of Premier League all time assists, is Cesc Fabregas. Having created goals for fun at both Arsenal and Chelsea, former Barcelona midfielder Fabregas was dubbed the assist king by both sets of fans, boasting some of the division’s top assists of all time. And though he was never able to close the gap on Giggs, he does hold the record for the most assists by a foreign import. With 111 assists before his career in England eventually ended, he will forever be remembered as one of the division’s best.

Wayne Rooney – Everton & Manchester United – 103 assists

With 208 goals in his Premier League collection, former Manchester United and Everton striker Wayne Rooney could be forgiven for being a little selfish when it comes to finding the back of the net. However, the former England international enjoyed sharing the wealth and provided Premier League assists for 103 goals before heading to Major League Soccer for a stint abroad. No other English player has managed as many assists as Rooney.

Frank Lampard – West Ham, Chelsea & Manchester City – 102 assists

There weren’t many debates bigger than Frank Lampard v Steven Gerrard during their prime, but there’s only room for the former in the top five Premier League assists table. The Chelsea legend, who also played for West Ham and Manchester City, secured 102 assists before bowing out for a spell in MLS. He is one of just four players who have managed to break the century barrier and he will be remembered as one of the best players of a generation.

Dennis Bergkamp – Arsenal – 94 assists

Not many players have had as many magical moments as Dennis Bergkamp, but the Dutchman also ensured he was as good at creating goals as he was scoring them himself. Though unable to enter the century club, he did manage to notch a more than impressive 94 assists for Arsenal. He sits two assists ahead of Steven Gerrard, who has of course retired, but could he lose his place in the top five over the coming seasons? Still playing, James Milner sits eighth in the list on 86 assists, while 10th placed Kevin De Bruyne is on 78.

Most Premier League assists in a season

Talking of Kevin De Bruyne, the Manchester City midfielder holds the joint record along with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry for the most Premier League assists in a season.
