Liverpool Injury Time Winners (2025/26)
Liverpool have left it late to find a winning goal on a few occasions already this season, snatching victory in injury time on three occasions so far.
In addition to that, Liverpool scored their winning goal against Arsenal in the final 10 minutes of normal time, while they made it 3-2 against Bournemouth on the opening day in the 88th minute, adding a fourth six minutes later.
Below we take a look at all three of their injury time winners so far and how they have managed to snatch victory so late, so often.
Rio Ngumoha vs Newcastle, 100th minute
The first, and probably most exhilarating, of Liverpool’s injury time winners came in their blockbuster clash against Newcastle at St James’ Park in the second week of the Premier League season.
The game was enough of a spectacle with the saga surrounding Alexander Isak’s move from Newcastle to Liverpool, which at the time remained incomplete. After coming back from 2-0 down in the second half, the Geordies will have thought goals from Bruno Guimarães and William Osula were enough to silence the rowdy away section.
That was not to be, however, as 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha, who had only been on the pitch since the 90th minute, latched onto Mohamed Salah’s pass and smashed the ball into the back of the net. Elation in the away end as Arne Slot’s side snuck out of the North East with all three points, kick-starting a trend of last-gasp winners for the Reds.
Mohamed Salah vs Burnley, 95th minute
Following an 83rd minute winner against Arsenal, Liverpool headed to Turf Moor off the back of the international break. Many had expected them to continue their winning ways with ease against a newly-promoted side, but it wasn’t to be.
With the score not shifting from 0-0 and the game dragging into the dying embers, Jeremie Frimpong fired a speculative cross into the 18-yard box. The ball struck the elbow of Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri just centimetres inside the area, giving the referee no choice but to point to the spot.
Step up none other than Mohamed Salah to win the game for Liverpool… 1-0. A second last-minute winner of the season and another three points on the board, Liverpool maintained their 100% record in the league.
Virgil van Dijk vs Atlético Madrid, 92nd minute
It is not just in the Premier League where Liverpool have left it late to find a winning goal, as they kept the trend running in the opening round of the Champions League League phase.
Atlético Madrid headed to Anfield with memories of previous success there still fresh in the mind, but soon had those wiped after the home side went two goals up in the opening six minutes. Some unusually early scoring from Arne Slot’s men.
In typical fashion, Diego Simeone’s side hung tough and Marcos Llorente netted just before half-time to keep their hopes alive. The Spanish midfielder stepped up again in the 81st minute to level things up and seemingly secure his side a point. However, as we’ve seen, it would be foolish to count Liverpool out at any moment before the final whistle.
When Liverpool won a corner in the 92nd minute, there was as much of a sense of expectation as belief that the team would find another late goal, and so they did. Dominik Szoboszlai floated the ball into the box and in the right place at the right time was captain Virgil van Dijk to thunder home a header from all of 12 yards. The perfect, albeit late, birthday present for manager Arne Slot.
