Michael Carrick Drifts In Next Permanent Manchester United Manager Odds Despite Derby Victory

Despite a convincing victory over Manchester City in his first game in charge, interim Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has drifted to 5/1 with William Hill to get the job on a permanent basis.

The former United midfielder couldn’t have had a better start but is now the 5/1 second favourite after it was revealed that Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner will depart the club at the end of the season – seeing him shorten to 6/5 to be in the Old Trafford dugout on the first day of next season.

Gareth Southgate remains in the running for the job at 6/1, with Thomas Tuchel next in the betting at 9/1.

After Glasner’s explosive comments in a recent press conference, he was as short as 8/15 to be the next Premier League manager to leave but he’s drifted to 7/1 as it seems he now will see the season out at Selhurst Park. Thomas Frank has shortened to 4/9 from 6/4, and Nuno Espirito Santo has also notably shortened into 2/1 from 10/1, whilst Arne Slot remains in the running at 6/1.

Manchester United Manager on 22nd August 2026 Odds:

  • Oliver Glasner – 6/5
  • Michael Carrick – 5/1
  • Gareth Southgate – 6/1
  • Thomas Tuchel – 9/1
  • Julian Nagelsmann – 12/1
  • Bar – 16/1

Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “Michael Carrick’s short term future at Man Utd definitely looks secure after he led the side to a 2-0 victory over rivals Man City, however, he has drifted markedly to secure the job permanently.

“He was 6/5 to lead the side at the beginning of the 2026/27 season prior to the weekend but has drifted out to 5/1 despite his Manchester derby win. Oliver Glasner has shot to the top of the betting after he confirmed he will leave Crystal Palace at the end of the season – he’s now the 6/5 favourite to be the Man United manager at the beginning of next season.

“Glasner’s outburst saw him cut to odds-on to be the next Premier League manager to leave, but he’s since been overtaken by Thomas Frank (4/9) and Nuno Espirito Santo (2/1) as their futures look increasingly up in the air courtesy of recent results.”

While the atmosphere at Old Trafford was deafening on Saturday afternoon, the Red Devils are a long way from the glory years under Sir Alex Ferguson and all eyes are on the hunt for the next Manchester United manager as they look to challenge for silverware yet again.
