Who Are The Loudest Fans In The Premier League?
Which teams have the reputation for being the loudest in the Premier League doesn’t always align with the objective measures. After all, noise alone doesn’t guarantee an intimidating atmosphere.
Teams with larger stadiums are at a distinct advantage. More than 75,000 fans at Old Trafford should be louder than crowds that are less than a third of the size.
It’s not always how it works out, however, with the famed difficult away days at Stoke City showing it’s not all about size. Here are the loudest fans in the Premier League:
Everton
Moving from Goodison Park to Hill Dickinson Stadium hasn’t becalmed Toffees fans. Since moving home stadiums, Everton have ranked in the top five in the world in decibels.
Celtic are the only team outside of Turkey in the top four. Beşiktaş, Galatasaray, and Fenerbahçe are first, second, and third, respectively.
Liverpool
Staying on Merseyside, Anfield has repeatedly been named by Thierry Henry as the loudest Premier League stadium he played in. Even when they’re not Premier League betting favourites, Liverpool’s fans belt out a goosebump-inducing rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone.
Some might criticise how the fans quieten for the rest of the match, but a packed Anfield remains a unique experience for fans and players alike.
Newcastle United
Unwaveringly loyal, Newcastle fans stood by the club in the depths of Mike Ashley’s reign.
With the Magpies winning their first major trophy in half a century and becoming a Champions League regular, their fans are the most upbeat they’ve been in living memory.
Crystal Palace
Ultras aren’t the first thing that comes to mind with Premier League fans. It’s not part of football’s culture that has become commonplace in the UK.
Crystal Palace’s Holmesdale Fanatics are different from other Premier League fans. The atmosphere has been particularly raucous with the great football played under Oliver Glasner.
Nottingham Forest
From the pre-match ritual of Mull of Kintyre to their ferocious support throughout the match, Nottingham Forest’s fans have made the City Ground one of the hardest places to visit in the Premier League.
There’s no reason for that to change any time soon. Forest’s faithful get behind their team even when the going gets tough.
Chelsea
Chelsea’s fans aren’t consistently loud like others on this list. When Stamford Bridge is rocking, though, it has one of the best atmospheres in the Premier League.
How many teams have a sound as iconic as the Blues’ fans bashing the metal boards around the stadium?
Leeds United
It’s never easy going to Elland Road. Leeds’ fans are partisan, boisterous, and keen to make the opposition uncomfortable.
Leeds don’t need to be competing for major honours to get their fans involved in the game. Quietening the Elland Road faithful is part of the challenge on an away day.
Brentford
One of the smallest stadiums in Premier League history, Brentford’s home ground punches above its weight from a noise perspective.
For instance, the Gtech Community Stadium is almost 60,000 smaller than Old Trafford, but with fans close to the pitch and a physical brand of football, it’s a difficult place to visit.
Manchester United
The sheer number of fans means Old Trafford has to be among the loudest Premier League stadiums. It’s not as hostile as many of the venues above it, but it can still be an imposing venue when big matches roll around.
Ruben Amorim will hope he can reignite the fear factor around Old Trafford that existed throughout the 1990s, 2000s, and the first part of the 2010s.
Sunderland
The Stadium of Light isn’t quite as intimidating as St. James’ Park, but it’s still an iconic sporting venue.
Sunderland’s long-term Premier League prospects rely on making the Stadium of Light into a fortress once again.
