- Preston’s start to the season has been alarming, with back‑to‑back defeats in the Championship leaving them as one of five sides yet to pick up a point. They’ve now gone eight games without a win inside 90 minutes across competitive fixtures and pre‑season friendlies, highlighting the lack of momentum at Deepdale.
- There are also issues off the pitch for Preston this season, with rumours suggesting that unrest behind the scenes played a part in captain Ben Whiteman’s departure to Wrexham. It’s fair to say the atmosphere around the club is far from ideal heading into this tie.
- These two sides haven’t met in a competitive fixture since a League Cup meeting back in 2004, while Preston’s last victory over Everton came all the way back in 1961. North End head into Wednesday night as the 19/4 outsiders with William Hill.
- You have to go back to 1995 for the last time Everton won a major trophy, the Blues would love a real cup run this season under David Moyes, a man who spent nearly ten years here at Deepdale as a player then manager.
- The Toffees made the perfect start to their Premier League campaign on Saturday with a 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace on home soil, a result which should fill Everton with confidence and optimism for the new season.
- Everton make the short trip to Preston as the odds-on favourites with William Hill, whilst punters can find extra value in the Everton victory if they back them on the ‘Win To Nil’ market at 6/4 with the leading bookmaker.
