Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United will make the trek to the St Mary’s Stadium to face a Southampton side currently languishing in 18th position. The Red Devils will be looking to sweep aside the Saints with a win to leapfrog Everton into sixth position.
Southampton vs Man United: odds and predictions
The Saints are wagering as 10/3 outsiders in our Southampton vs Man United predictions with the away team trading as 17/20 favourites, despite being dealt long odds. The forecast of a draw is priced up at a 13/5 pick.
If the Saints are to take anything away from this game they will need to either hit United on the counter or do the damage via corners or set-piece plays.
The man for both these instances is the former Liverpool striker Danny Ings, who, alongside Charlie Austin, will be their focal point for goalscoring opportunities.
Ings has proven to be a thorn in the opposition tactics with his attacking runs in behind the defence, while his sparring partner Austin will use his physicality to buy himself space in the box.
Both Ings and Austin are operating at odds of 13/2 to score first in our Southampton vs Man United betting tips.
Yet they face a superior attacking unit in United, who come to the St Mary’s with a need to clinch all three points, given that their competitors are leagues away in both points and offensive displays.
Leading the charge is Anthony Martial, who has netted five times in his last six appearances in a Red shirt. But while it may tempting to punt on him, our William Hill traders also have a keen eye on the likes of Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata.
Rashford is our pick to score first, tipped at 11/2, and with his pace and skill, the Saints defenders will have a hard time in keeping him quiet.
Southampton vs Manchester United head-to-head: (most recent first) Southampton 0-0 Man United, Southampton 0-1 Man United, Southampton 0-0 Man United, Southampton 2-3 Man United, Southampton 0-2 Man United
Southampton vs Man United predictions: score, best bet, scorer tips
Predicted score: Man United to win 2-0, trading @ 15/2
Given the Saints woeful defensive record this season where they have conceded 24 goals in their opening 13 games, a 2-0 pick for United as the first match bet in our Southampton vs Man United predictions will surely reap value for your money.
Meanwhile, United will see themselves as firm favourites to sweep aside Mark Hughes men, considering that after this Saturday’s clash, the Christmas fixture list is not especially warm and welcoming towards them.
To kick-start the Christmas festivities, a much-needed three points look to be on the cards for Mourinho’s men, with a clean sheet to go along with it.
Best bet: Both teams to score, projected @ 8/11
Should United’s day take a turn for the worse, William Hill’s betting tipsters have all the odds covered.
Despite the second match betting tip of our predictions contradicting the first, there is every chance that this could turn into a tough affair for the Red Devils with the St Mary’s outfit getting in on the goalscoring act.
Combined with the fact that Man United have conceded at least once in their last eight Premier League games, the 8/11 odds of both teams scoring appears as a much more appealing bet than the initial projections.
Predicted scorer: Anthony Martial our pick to score first @ 5/1
The Frenchman has scored in five of his last six games for his side, and could become just the fourth different player to score in six consecutive appearances for United, should he convert in this Saturday’s clash.
After an average attacking display against Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace last week, the last of our Southampton vs Man United predictions forecast that he will return to his earlier form and net first.
In doing so, Martial will cement his name alongside the likes of Eric Cantona, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo, and could elevate his status should his goal lead to a crucial away win.
