Euro 2024 Qualifiers: All you need to know

| BY News Team

The qualification games for next summer’s European Championship in Germany kicks off this week, with 53 nations around the continent vying for 23 places in Europe’s premier international tournament.

There’s a lot to get your head around between now and the opening tournament fixture next summer, so below is a complete guide to the logistics and process of the Euro 2024 Qualifiers.

What are the Euro 2024 Qualifiers?

The Euro 2024 Qualifiers are a series of fixtures over the next 12 months to determine the 24 UEFA men’s national teams that will play in next summer’s Euro 2024 Championship in Germany. As the host nation, Germany do not need to qualify, so a total of 23 nations will have to proceed from the qualification phase of the tournament in order to feature in next year’s competition.

There are 53 nations in the competition spread across 10 different qualifying groups. Seven of the groups have five nations, whilst the other three include six.

The groups are as follows:

Group A: Spain, Scotland, Norway, Georgia, Cyprus

Group B: Netherlands, France, Republic of Ireland, Greece, Gibraltar

Group C: Italy, England, Ukraine, North Macedonia, Malta

Group D: Croatia, Wales, Armenia, Türkiye, Latvia

Group E: Poland, Czechia, Albania, Faroe Islands, Moldova

Who qualifies from the Euro 2024 Qualifiers?

Each nation plays eachother twice – one home and one away – in a round-robin format over the next 12 months. The top two nations with the most points from each group are automatically in the hat for the Euro 2024 Finals next summer.

The eagle-eyed amongst you may have noticed that two nations from each group only equals 20 teams that qualify automatically, whilst there will be 23 nations that progress from this phase of the tournament in total. This is because three of the 24 places will be determined by play-off spots based on their performance in the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League, via the playoff system.

How does the playoff system work?

Twelve teams will compete in the Euro 2024 playoffs in March 2024, qualifying on the basis of their performances in the 2022/23 Nations League. Usually, these are the winners of each of the four groups in Leagues A, B and C. If they have already qualified they will be replaced by the next best-ranked team in their league, and if there are not enough non-qualified teams in the same league, then it filters down to the next league, finishing with League D.

Fixtures will be determined by a series of draws following the conclusion of the European Qualifiers for the final tournament. There will be six semi-finals on 21 March 2024 and three finals on 26 March 2024, with the three winning teams in those games completing the 24-team finals line-up.
