The England Euro 2020 odds rate them as fifth favourites for what their manager Gareth Southgate is describing as almost “a home tournament”.
The Three Lions couldn’t deliver a feel-good finish to their expectation-exceeding World Cup 2018. They squandered several chances to equalise before losing 2-0 to Belgium in the third place play-off.
However, the mood remains optimistic. Twenty squad members – including 10 starters – are 28 or younger, they’ve established a playing style and the semi-finals and final of Euro 2020 are at Wembley.
England Euro 2020 odds – is football coming home?
England waited 22 years for this chance to play in the semi-finals of a major tournament. The gaps haven’t always been that wide though.
After their previous ventures to the final four of a World Cup in 1966 and 1990, they were back in the semi-finals again at Euro 1968 and Euro 1996 – two and six years respectively.
They also made it that far or beyond on the two occasions tournaments were held in England: World Cup 1966 and Euro 1996. In staging the final, they’re the closest thing Euro 2020 has to hosts.
The England Euro 2020 odds are 8/1. That price puts them behind World Cup superiors France (4/1) and Belgium (7/1), but ahead of conquerors Croatia (14/1). Spain (11/2) and Germany (6/1) are the others considered more likely winners.
UEFA Nations League odds – a chance for revenge on Croatia
Before Euro 2020 comes the inaugural Nations League, taking place between September 2017 and June 2018. England are paired with Spain and Croatia, given them a swift shot at avenging their semi-final defeat.
Southgate’s side are again more fancied than the team that kept them out of the final, valued at 2/1 in the League A Group 4 Winner betting to Croatia’s 6/1.
However, despite a disappointing World Cup, Spain are 8/13 favourites to finish first under new boss Luis Enrique.
