Portugal (27/10)
Portugal, led by manager Roberto Martínez, have looked solid throughout the tournament. Their squad is full of quality, mixing experienced stars with exciting young players. Cristiano Ronaldo might be in the latter stages of his career, but he’s still a major threat up front. Supporting him are creative players like Bruno Fernandes, João Félix and the pacey Rafael Leão, who can all change a game in an instant.
At the back, Rúben Dias is the key man in defence, who was partnered with Pepe in their win over Germany – whose career would seem to be timeless, aged 42. Portugal’s goalkeeper Diogo Costa has also impressed with some important saves throughout the competition. Portugal’s semi-final win over Germany showed how dangerous they can be when they’re focused and take their chances, especially after going a goal down thanks to Florian Wirtz.
Spain (10/11)
Spain, managed by Luis de la Fuente, play a very different style. They love to keep the ball and wear teams down with quick passing and smart movement. In midfield, young stars Pedri and Gavi have become key players, showing maturity and control beyond their years. Up front, Álvaro Morata adds experience, while the electric Nico Williams and recent sensation Lamine Yamal have proven to be nightmares for opposing defenders.
Spain were impressive in their semi-final win over France, putting five goals past the 2022 World Cup Runners Up. While they had less possession, they converted their chances a lot better than their opponents, showing how confident and well-organised this new-look Spanish side is becoming.
Prediction
Tactically, this final could go either way. Portugal will likely sit back a bit more and look to hit on the counter-attack, using their speed and finishing ability. Spain, on the other hand, will try to control the game through the midfield and keep the ball moving quickly to find openings.
The battle in midfield will be especially important. If Spain can keep Fernandes quiet and control the tempo, they’ll have the upper hand. But, if Portugal can break through the Spanish press and get the ball to their forwards in space, they could be deadly.
Set pieces and small moments could also make the difference in a tight match like this. Both teams have players who can score from free-kicks or corners, and one mistake could decide the outcome; especially when Ronaldo is seeking to win his country’s second Nations League title.
