Lea Schuller, Germany – One To Watch

Germany have a proud history of winning the women’s Euros, lifting the title on eight occasions. But they suffered shock exits in the quarter-finals of Euro 2017 and the 2019 FIFA World Cup. That prompted something of a reboot, with a host of new talent being introduced to good effect. One of the leading lights of this next-generation is Bayern Munich’s Lea Schuller – a predatory striker who is just entering her prime.

Schuller is the reigning Germany Player of the Year after recording her finest season yet for club and country. She scored over a quarter of all of Germany’s goals in 2021, helping her nation qualify for Euro 2022 with a 100% record. What makes Schuller all the more exciting is that she still has plenty of scope to keep developing and making her mark on the international game.

Having made her Bundesliga debut aged just 16, Schuller soon made the move from Essen to Bayern Munich and her game has gone from strength to strength. With Germany looking for a ninth Euros trophy, she will lead the line and continue her dynamic partnership with Wolfsburg’s Alexandra Popp. Schuller has the anticipation, movement, speed and composure of a world-class striker, and is a constant threat either on the counter-attack or as part of more patient build-up play. Germany have history at the Euros, and Schuller is their main hope for future success.
