Punters Licking Wounds After Ludvig Aberg Falls Short In Players Championship Pursuit
William Hill came out on the right side of Ludvig Aberg’s final round collapse, with the bookmaker avoiding a five-figure payout after Cameron Young’s late surge saw him clinch the Players Championship.
With less than one month until The Masters gets underway at Augusta National, the eyes of golf fans around the world were on TPC Sawgrass this weekend and Young, now in the top five players in the world, produced a fantastic final round to prevail.
Matt Fitzpatrick looked a huge threat at one point and the Englishman was right in the mix to win the PGA Tour’s flagship event but Young held his nerve to clinch his second title on the tour.
The first of golf’s four majors is on the horizon and the best players in the world will be hoping to hit form heading into the spring, and Young is certainly in the prime of his career at this moment in time.
Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “Punters may have been left reeling by pre-tournament favourite Ludvig Åberg’s surrender of the lead at TPC Sawgrass, but we certainly breathed a big sigh of relief when Cameron Young won The Players Championship last night.
“After Collin Morikawa’s early withdrawal from the tournament, Ludvig Åberg was comfortably our biggest loser going into the final round, and at one stage we were staring down the barrel of a five-figure payout if he closed the deal.
“He accounted for over 6.5% of bets, but took on a lot more money from customers at 16/1 pre-tournament, compared to Young at 28/1.
“Matt Fitzpatrick was another name we had earmarked from the start. He also took a similar amount of bets to Åberg at 28/1 before Thursday’s start and put up a fight in the fourth round, but fell just short after dropping a shot on the 18th hole.
“While Young’s win is a positive result for our book overall, the 2022 US Open champion would’ve been over twice as profitable a result.”
