Truist Championship Preview: Red-hot Russell Eyes Carolina Glory

The 2025 Truist Championship heads to Pennsylvania this week as the PGA Tour rolls into Philadelphia for the first time since 2016.
The historic Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course will host this prestigious event, offering a refreshing change of pace from the usual venues and a true test of all-around golf. With a strong field in town and the PGA Championship just weeks away, expect a fiercely competitive week of action on one of the Northeast’s finest layouts.
Restored to its golden-era glory, the Wissahickon Course is a classic parkland layout that blends subtle strategy with punishing execution. Playing as a par-70 at just under 7,400 yards, the course features elevated greens, deep bunkering, and tight tree-lined fairways. Precision iron play, smart course management, and a reliable short game will be key — wayward drivers will struggle to keep pace.
Our picks for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson didn’t quite hit the mark, with only Rasmus Hojgaard making the cut but we’re aiming to turn things around in Philadelphia.
Russell Henley – 25/1
Our top pick this week is Russell Henley. The Georgia native is playing some of the most consistent golf of his career, with three top eight finishes in his last five events, including a win at Bay Hill and a T8 finish at the RBC Heritage. Henley’s tidy short game and accurate iron play make him a dangerous threat particularly if the course gets firm and fast.
Henley has quietly built a strong resume over the past 18 months, and even outside of his recent victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, he’s consistently been in the mix at tougher venues; it’s no fluke. His putting – historically streaky – has improved significantly this season. Henley ranks in the top 15 on tour in strokes gained: approach and putting, two key stats for success here.
While we start to go through the gears of the golf season and Henley clearly in good form, he represents serious value at 25/1 to add another title to his name.
Sam Burns – 50/1
Joining Henley as one to watch this week is Sam Burns. The five-time PGA Tour winner is a proven threat and always seems to raise his game at bigger events. He’s coming off a solid T13 finish at the RBC Heritage and T5 at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.
Burns is well-suited to thanks to his strong driving and ability to get hot with the flat stick.
He is the leading player with the most strokes gained: putting and has historically excelled in tough-field events, including a win at the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge and a playoff run at the WGC-Dell Match Play. With a powerful all-around game and a solid track record on Southern tracks, Burns is primed to contend.
