Greyhound tips: How to bet on greyhounds

The Greyhound Derby continues into June and promises to offer more excitement for greyhound racing enthusiasts.

The semi-finals have been decided and now we look ahead to the final stage and how the outright betting is shaping up.

The format

The first round of heats of the 2025 Greyhound Derby have been and gone, with the first three from each Round One heat progressing into the second round, with the third round of heats being the final one.

Following the third round of the heats, the competition then moved into a quarter-final stage where the first three dogs progress to the semi-finals – obviously, the deeper into the competition, the higher the quality in each race.

The semi-finals consist of two races, where the top three from each race progress into a six-runner Greyhound Derby final.

After some exhilarating semi-final performances, we have our finalists. De Lahdedah, Sole Mio, Bombay Pat, Bockos Diamond, Cheap Sandwiches, and Droopys Plunge will return to Towcester on Saturday for the chance to be crowned Greyhound Derby Champion and land a cool £175,000 prize.

Outright betting

As mentioned, just six greyhounds remain in contention for 2025’s prize after the semi-final stage and we have seen some dazzling performances as well as a couple of upsets.

Bockos Diamond is the clear favourite at Evens for the Derby. He kicked off with a comfortable victory in his first heat seeing off a relatively strong field for the round. However, the reigning Irish Derby Champion was pipped into third in the quarter-finals despite having been sent off as the clear favourite. Though we can’t forget that he boasts a streak of 15 wins including all rounds within the Irish equivalent, where he also smashed the track record at Shelbourne Park, recording a time of 28.94 seconds before matching that time in the semi-finals. Questions were asked after he only managed to finish third in his quarter-final run, but he put those doubts to bed by blitzing the field in the semi-finals. He heads to Towcester with many fans willing him to make history on Saturday night.

2024 Greyhound Derby hero De Lahdedah can’t be counted out at odds of 4/1. His form at the track is clear for all to see as he took out the biggest prize of all last season and he still looks to have all the zest he had that day, scoring an easy victory in Heat 1 and justifying favouritism in Heat 2 of the quarter-finals, seeing him shorten to 9/2 from 10/1. His convincing victory in the first semi-final saw his price shorten further into 4/1.

Droopys Plunge could be the way to go if you’re looking for an each-way angle in. A 12/1 chance for the Greyhound Derby, he beat Bockos Diamond in the quarter-finals and was behind the two market leaders in the semi-finals. He was undoubtedly in the stronger of the two semis and could be underestimated here off the back of that third-place finish.
