Champion Hurdle
There’s no better place to start than with the Champion Hurdle. We currently have a 4/6 favourite in the form of Constitution Hill, who many expected to never see on a racetrack ever again. He has been at much bigger prices this year in the lead up to the race but has rightly been cut to odds-on for the race after his Christmas demolition of Lossiemouth at Kempton.
He can be backed at odds of 4/7 in the NRMB market, which may be a safer bet considering the horse’s past injury troubles. He dominates the market, and rightly so, as he looked back to his best on Boxing Day.
Queen Mother Champion Chase
A slightly more competitive market here in the Champion Chase. The current favourite is another Nicky Henderson trained horse, Jonbon. He’s 9/4 for the race following back-to-back wins in the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham, as well as the Tingle Creek at Sandown. You can have questions over his jumping at times, but he is the horse to beat. He’s a slightly shorter 7/4 in the NRMB market if you want the insurance on your bet.
Ryanair Chase
The Ryanair Chase is an interesting ante-post market, due to several of the market principles having multiple entries at the Festival. The market is currently headed by joint favourites in Fact To File and Gaelic Warrior who are both 5/1, if you could guarantee either horses’ participation in this particular race, then it’s a safe bet to say they’d go off much shorter.
As a result, they are shorter in the NRMB market with Fact To File a 6/4 shot and Gaelic Warrior 3/1. Much shorter yes, but you receive your stake back if they were to run in another race.
Stayers’ Hurdle
The Stayers’ Hurdle market is dominated by one horse, Teahupoo. The winner of last year’s contest is a strong 6/4 favourite to go back-to-back, whilst being a slightly shorter 11/10 in the NRMB betting. Either looks a good price as rivals to his crown are still few and far between, with several of the contenders in the betting likely to go elsewhere.
Gold Cup
The standout contest of the week is the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Galopin Des Champs heads the market as he goes in pursuit of a third consecutive Gold Cup, he’s 4/5 in the ante-post betting. Many began to question his credentials after he was beaten on his first run this season by two younger horses in Fact To File and Spillane’s Tower. He was back to his imperious best when landing the Savills Chase over Christmas time, if he’s in that form at Cheltenham, it’ll be hard to see any horse getting in the way of his Gold Cup hat-trick.
