Champion Chase

| BY News Team

The Queen Mother Champion Chase is arguably held in higher regard than the Gold Cup, bringing the fastest and most agile chasers together to battle to the finish line.

Jumping ability is paramount as one slow jump or mistake could cost a horse the race. A fierce contest, few horses win this race more than once in their careers.

Trainers Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls, however, have particular ability to produce Champion Chasers and as such, Henderson’s Sprinter Sacre and Altior and Nicholls’ Master Minded have won the race twice each.

Previous winners

Nicky Henderson’s Altior has been the most impressive and untouchable two-mile chaser in recent years, with two consecutive Champion Chase wins. Current favourite for this year’s renewal Energumene will be chasing a similar achievement having won decisively in 2022, when recording trainer Willie Mullins’ first Champion Chase victory.

Put The Kettle On was the first mare in history to win the race, however this year’s renewal does not feature any mares.
