The Melbourne Cup is back! The historical race inaugurated 162 years ago back in 1861, takes place at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia at 3pm (AEDT) on November 7th and looks likely to be one to remember.

Let’s have a look at the upcoming fixture, previous winners, record-breakers and how to bet on this year’s Melbourne Cup.

Melbourne Cup 2023 Overview

Melbourne Cup Day is one of four race days which make up the Melbourne Cup Carnival and is arguably the most prestigious event in the Australian racing calendar. All eyes will be on the 3pm (AEDT) Melbourne Cup on the 7th of November as 24 entries battle it out for an $8million prize pool. Melbourne Cup Day, which takes place on the first Tuesday in November every year, consists of ten races with the Melbourne Cup sitting in slot number seven.

Melbourne Cup Betting

As with any race, the same rules apply when it comes to choosing your bet ahead of the Melbourne Cup. Checking on the form, trainer, jockey, and patterns in recent performances are all good indicators for choosing your pick in any given race.

With the Melbourne Cup in particular, setting your sights on certain important lead up races could give you the edge when it comes to race day.  Some of the most important events in the build up to the Melbourne Cup are the Mackinnon Stakes (Flemington), the Lexus Stakes (Flemington), the Moonee Valley Cup (Moonee Valley), the Cox Plate (Moonee Valley), and the Caulfield Cup (Caulfield). Experienced punters will be looking at the outcomes of these races to determine a better understanding of the field when it comes to the Melbourne Cup.

So, to give yourself the best chance on race day, remember to study the horses and jockeys, analyse their form, consider the track conditions, pay attention to trainer and owner partnerships and most importantly, manage your bankroll wisely and bet responsibly.

Melbourne Cup Results

The 2022 edition of the Melbourne Cup saw an upset with the ex-French trained Gold Trip, who’s starting price was 20/1, ridden to victory by Australian native Mark Zahra.  The favourite was James Ferguson’s Deauville Legend who came in at number four last year.  Albeit unsuccessful last year, the favourites do have a decent track record in this race, with 35 of 150 races (23%) being won by favourites and 71 favourites (47%) finishing in the first three placings.

In 2021, Verry Elleegant triumphed at 17/1 over favourite Incentivise who was priced at 19/10, with the year prior in 2020 being won by 25/1 shot Twilight Payment which shows that it is certainly worth taking a look at some each way bets on the larger-priced runners within the field as upsets have been common in recent years.

Although the final line-up hasn’t been confirmed for the big race, as of the 30thOctober 2023, 32 third acceptances have been taken meaning a quarter of them will miss out on the chance of glory come Tuesday 7th November.

Notable third acceptances include two of Willie Mullin’s stars Vauban (5/2) who would go into this race on the back of two wins in a row steered on by top-jockey Ryan Moore, and Absurde (16/1) who will be ridden by Zac Purton. Gold Trip (9/2) is set to return with a different jockey onboard in the form of James McDonald as Mark Zahra favours a run aboard Caulfield Cup champion Without A Fight (7/1), trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman. As well as Gold Trip, trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace will be looking to improve their chances with Future History (25/1), who will have Hollie Doyle aboard, becoming the first women from outside Australian and New Zealand to ride in the Melbourne Cup.

Melbourne Cup Winners Through the Years

Over the years there have been some fantastic Melbourne Cup winners. The race record was set by Bart Cummings’ horse Kingston Rule back in 1990 with a time of a 3:16.30 which remains unbeaten.  Another record setter was Comedy King in 1910 who triumphed becoming the first foreign-bred horse to win this prestigious race which has since embraced foreign-bred and trained horses to ensure tough competition year after year.

Hollie Doyle and Rachel King are following in the footsteps of jockey Maree Lydon who became the first female to ride in the Melbourne Cup back in 1987 on Argonaut Style where she ran second-last. However these two will be looking to carry on the torch with more success and perhaps emulate Michellie Payne who made history in 2015 by becoming the first female rider to win the Melbourne Cup, as she guide 100/1 shot Prince Of Penzance to a memorable success.

One of the most incredible Melbourne Cups was in 2005 in front of a crowd of 106,476 where Makybe Diva made history becoming the only horse to win this race three times.

We’re hoping for another exhilarating race to rival those prior, so stay tuned for the 4th of November where the final line-up of riders will be announced.
