Grand National 2024 – Who is going to surprise?

| BY News Team

Amidst the anticipation surrounding the upcoming Grand National, we are on the search for potentially overlooked contenders who could surprise us all at Aintree.

Below we will spotlight the dark horses poised to make their mark on one of horse racing’s most prestigious events. William Hill are also offering Non Runner Money Back on all bets on this year’s Grand National.

Bet on the Grand National with William Hill

Roi Mage – 66/1

Finishing seventh in last year’s Grand National, Roi Mage is without a doubt a horse that can outrun his odds at Aintree. He has been in decent form, with a respectable second in the Bluegrass round Down Royal. He stayed on last year and wasn’t beaten by much and being 4lbs lower than he was in this race last year is another positive. He is 12 years of age so this would most likely be his final attempt at this race as horses aged 13 or older don’t have a great Grand National record. Roi Mage is 66/1 for this year’s Grand National.

Desertmore House – 50/1

This nine-year-old gelding of Martin Brassil’s has an interesting form angle leading him to being shortlisted as one at a higher price with a chance of surprising. He’s been in decent form running in behind some classy competitors who ran well at Cheltenham Festival, the likes of Meetingofthewaters and Embassy Gardens. Most recently he finished a good third in a handicap round Naas. Back in 2023, he showed his potential beating the likes of Stumptown and Salvador Ziggy. He is off a reasonable mark and carrying only 10st 1lbs so we could see him run into the minor places. Desertmore House is 50/1 for this year’s Grand National.

Coko Beach – 40/1

Coko Beach has run in two Grand Nationals in his career finishing 8th in 2022 and was unlucky in last year’s race when making a mistake three out and being pulled up not long after. Gordon Elliott is the best performing trainer of the Grand National having won it three times before, so he will have Coko Beach in tip-top condition for his latest attempt at getting round Aintree with one of his horses in front. He is proven in big-field, high-class staying handicap chases having won races like the 2021 Thyestes Chase. He is versatile ground wise and has a forward run style, so he most definitely can outrun his odds. Coko Beach is 40/1 for this year’s Grand National.

Limerick Lace – 25/1

Limerick Lace is in fine form, having just come off the back of a brilliant victory in the Mares’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Fending off fellow J P McManus horse Dinoblue in the closing stages, she really showing the determination and staying abilities a Grand National horse would need. Limerick Lace is also a full sister to Cromwell’s winner on Thursday – Inothewayurthinkin, who won the Kim Muir in very good fashion, and we can see Gavin Cromwell’s runner doing something similar at Aintree. Limerick Lace is 25/1 to win this year’s Grand National.

Galvin – 20/1

This season Galvin hasn’t been in the greatest form having lost three times, including two in handicaps on the Cheltenham Cross Country course but he ran really well when finishing fourth in the Grade Two Boyne Hurdle at Navan in February. This suggests that Galvin will want better ground, with Good being the preference. The main reason as to why Galvin is a solid selection at a higher price is that he is eleven pounds lower than when attempting the Grand National for the first-time last season where he unseated Davy Russell at the first fence. We feel the handicapper has taken a risk with the mark he has given the gelding for this year’s Grand National. Galvin is 20/1 to win this year’s Grand National.
