This Saturday’s Grade 3 Greatwood Gold Cup is a Handicap Chase staged at Newbury racecourse and is always a hotly-contested event.

The race is run over a distance of 2m4f and the current sponsors will also be supporting the Greatwood charity. Scroll down for our runner-by-runner guide with a tricast prediction on the Greatwood Gold Cup.

Kandoo Kid (Paul Nicholls)

After sidestepping the Ladbrokes Trophy at Kempton last weekend, the Kandoo Kid takes up the option of running here. He’s a course and distance winner too.

Iroko (Greenall & Guerriero)

Connections are leaning towards a trip to Scotland as long as conditions are suitable for this Grand National hope. Watch your bets!

Midnight River (Dan Skelton)

Winner of the William Hill Handicap Chase at Aintree in 2023, but has struggled to reach those heights since. Could run well after his break.

Le Milos (Dan Skelton)

The 10-year-old had been without a win since his Coral Gold Cup victory in November 2022, but changed all that when scoring in a Veterans’ Chase at Warwick. Possibly a revitalised horse?

Saint Segal (Jane Williams)

Showed his true colours with an 11-length success under Jonathan Burke here in December, and has subsequently run well in the Scottish Champion Chase.

Light N Strike (Emma Lavelle)

Has returned from a 543-day break woefully out of form. Would be a shock winner from way out in the betting.

Paint The Dream (David Brace)

A family favourite for the Brace’s, but the veteran hasn’t sparkled in any of his races this term and keeps getting beaten by double digits.

Vincenzo (Sam Thomas)

Owner Dai Walters holds every chance of making it a Saturday big race double with this exciting 7-y-o. Dylan Johnston takes off a handy 3lbs too.

Kotmask (Gary & Josh Moore)

Has been running well around Ascot this season in some Class 2 affairs, but can he cut the mustard in this grade?

Billytherealbigred (Greenall & Guerriero)

Finished runner up to stablemate Jagwar in a decent renewal of the Timeform Novices’ Handicap Chase at Cheltenham’s January meeting. Should go well again.

Beau Balko (Paul Nicholls)

Consistent youngster who unfortunately just keeps running into a smart one this season. He looks sure to play his part once more over this 2m4f trip.

Scarface (Joe Tizzard)

Not too dissimilar to the aforementioned runner, Scarface has been finding a couple too good for him in recent outings. He can make his presence felt once more.

Spyglass Hill (Barry Brennan)

If you think the name sounds familiar, it is. Spyglass Hill was a decent yardstick for Henry De Bromhead many moons ago, and now a veteran, he bravely won the Walrus Hunter Chase at Haydock a year ago. This is a mammoth task however.

Tedley (Nigel Twiston-Davies)

Homebred Tedley has been running with plenty of credit this season and faired reasonably well in a Grade 2 Novices’ Chase last time. He’s not without a hope.

Prince Quali (Robert Walford)

Robert Walford’s 8-y-o has only ever raced over 2m4f once, and that was when he used to be trained by David Cottin in France. This is a step into the unknown.

Booster Bob (Olly Murphy)

Olly Murphy has a good two-miler on his hands with Booster Bob, but his two previous attempts at today’s distance amounted to nothing.

Greatwood Gold Cup Prediction:

  1. Vincenzo
  2. Billytherealbigred
  3. Beau Balko
