Sandown’s feature race is the 2m Imperial Cup, an event dating back to 1907, and carries a purse of £100k with the sponsors offering up a £100k bonus for any horse who wins this race and goes on to win at the Cheltenham Festival next week.
1.50pm Sandown – 2m4f Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Final
This is probably the most wide open race of the day, but my vote goes towards Sean Bowen’s mount SCORPIO RISING.
Arriving here on the back of a three-timer, the six-year-old has won with conviction on each occasion and he’s yet to reach his ceiling. Thus, win number four is coming up.
2.05pm Wolverhampton – 6f Handicap
Trainer Karl Burke usually makes a quick start to the season in the spring months and his SILKY WILKIE looks well equipped to land this six furlong sprint.
Already a course and distance scorer, the seven-year-old has had a fruitful winter and can be in the thick of it again today.
2.27pm Sandown – 2m Imperial Cup Handicap Hurdle
RUBBER BALL bounced back to form in some style last Saturday at Newbury, and I see no reason to dessert him a week on from that victory.
The six-year-old looked like the winner from an early stage in proceedings, and he came home over five lengths in front. Connections appear to be striking again whilst the iron is hot.
2.42pm Wolverhampton – 1m½f Lincoln Trial Handicap
Kingman-gelding FIRST PRINCIPLE (NAP) is bred for stamina and can take this Lincoln Trial for the William Haggas yard.
Haggas likes to send runners to Doncaster for the Lincoln itself, and this four-year-old could well do the double based on his previous form.
3.00pm Sandown – 2m Mares’ National Hunt Flat Race (Listed Race)
LENNON GROVE is an interesting entry in this bumper, taking her chance after two nice runs at Thurles in recent times.
Gavin Cromwell is a shrewd trainer and his mare is well worth an each-way play in our horse racing betting, especially on this UK raid.
3.15pm Wolverhampton – 7f Lady Wulfruna Stakes (Listed Race)
Rated 100, THUNDER ROAR is never a 20/1 shot in my book and I will certainly be having a small each-way interest on the seven-year-old.
Second in last season’s Spring Mile and Autumn Mile, this shorter trip should play to the grey’s strengths.
3.35pm Sandown – 3m Handicap Chase
SOUND AND FURY was a fairly facile winner over this trip at Carlisle 19 days ago, and a repeat performance would be good enough to land this Sandown prize too.
Ben J and Ben P are always worth following in the sports betting markets due to their decent strike rate together, and this Foxtrot runner should be in the mix once more.
