Jane Mangan’s William Hill blog: Lattam for the Lincoln

William Hill ambassador Jane Mangan looks over the best of Saturday’s racing, with the start of the British Flat season from Doncaster and Jumps action from Newbury and Navan.

Doncaster, Saturday

The English Flat is back meaning the Lincoln is upon us. This year is hugely competitive as always. In a race like this you have to find a bit of value in the field and I like LATTAM to get his head in front in the Lincoln Handicap (3.35pm). He won the Irish equivalent to this race off a mark of 87, and he runs off 95 here. It is his first run for Julie Camacho which might just reinvigorate him after moving from William Haggas’. He looks a horse that Ryan Sexton will deliver late and I can see him smuggling him from stall 14 through the big field.

In the Cammidge Trophy (3:00pm), I like MARSHMAN in the first-time tongue-tie. His best form is on good-to-soft so you’d like to think he’ll handle soft. He’s by Harry Angel for Karl Burke and he’s a Group horse in a Listed race so he has a strong chance. His form in Chantilly back in April last year was good, and he’s proven that he can go well fresh as he kicked off last year with a winning debut. It’s easy to forget that they ran him in the Middle Park as a promising 2-year-old.

Navan, Saturday

Back closer to home and closer to my comfort zone now in Navan. FAMEAFTERTHEGLORY (3.25pm) was due to contest the Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last week, but he obviously didn’t get the opportunity to run with that race being abandoned. Considering his chase form and his chase mark of 130, he’ll be very formidable odds, but he should take a lot of beating.

Newbury, Saturday

In the Class 2 handicap chase at Newbury there’s unfortunately only 7 runners so we’re going to have to go straight here. I like SOLO (2:40pm), he is top-weight but Freddie Gingell takes 5lbs off, and he won a Grade 2 as a novice last year at Kempton beating Datsalrightgino. His last run at Ascot is good form finishing in behind Excello so I can see him running another good race here.
