Kevin Stott’s William Hill blog: Can’t wait to ride Mammas Girl

William Hill ambassador Kevin Stott assesses Mammas Girl’s chances in the 1000 Guineas as well as his two other rides on a high-class card at Newmarket.

Newmarket, Sunday

I kick off my rides on a big day at Newmarket with Cemhaan in the Howden Handicap (1.50pm). He’s gone well at the track before which is always a plus and he seems pretty versatile ground-wise so any rain shouldn’t be an issue. You can ignore the run in the November Handicap as the ground was really bad that day and I don’t think he wants it quite like that, so he should be happier on better ground here. George [Baker] has been happy with him at home and I’m looking forward to riding him.

It’s hard not to be excited about riding Mammas Girl in the 1000 Guineas (3.40pm). We’re drawn 20 of 20 which isn’t ideal but plenty of the fancied runners are on our side and I think I’d prefer to be high than low anyway. I’ve just got to try and get a good spot and hope she comes home strong like she did in the Nell Gwyn. She’s two from two at Newmarket and while we can’t be sure she’ll stay, everything she has done so far suggests she will, and she might even improve for it.

We’re really confident we’ve got a very smart filly on our hands, and I don’t think she should be underestimated whatsoever. To have a major chance in a Classic is fantastic and I can’t wait to get on her.

I also ride Mashadi in the five-furlong maiden (4.15pm). It looks a very hot contest on paper, but this lad has been going nicely at home and he’s impressed me in what he’s done on the gallops so far. He’ll definitely improve for whatever he does but his sire, Blue Point, has started his career as a sire well, and hopefully Mashadi can keep it going.
