Newbury Tips: Shocks Galore On Lockinge Stakes Day

William Hill News tipster Steve Mullington previews Saturday’s action at Newbury, with selections on every race on Lockinge Stakes Day at the track.

The feature race on Newbury’s eight-race card this Saturday is the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes, scheduled for 2.35 pm with a guaranteed prize fund of £400,000.

Newbury Tips Saturday:

  • 1.25pm – Kalpana (NAP)
  • 2.00pm – Lady Roisia
  • 2.35pm – Sahlan (NB)
  • 3.10pm – Albert Einstein
  • 3.45pm – Al Azd
  • 4.20pm – Korker
  • 5.00pm – Classic
  • 5.40pm – Chapter

Open to horses aged four years and older, the race is run over a straight mile. Our horse racing expert Steven Mullington guides you through the entire eight-race card:

1.25 – 1m4f Aston Park Stakes (Group 3)

Andrew Balding’s Group 1 star KALPANA (NAP) returns to the track this weekend and has every chance of getting off to a successful start in this Group 3 Stakes.

The mare could only manage seventh place in the Arc after being touted as the new Enable, however she bounced back with some authority against her own sex on Champions Day at Ascot. She may well go off the favourite for this contest.

2.00 – 1m2f Fillies’ Trial Stakes (Listed Race)

The Ralph Beckett-trained LADY ROISIA looks well overpriced in the horse racing betting for this Listed race for fillies and can give punters a good each-way run for their money.

Winner of the Oh So Sharp Maiden Fillies’ Stakes at the tail end of last season, she will have come on a bundle for the experience.

2.35 – 1m Lockinge Stakes (Group 1)

Francis Graffard-trained runners are pretty much dominating the races they have been entered for in this early part of the new French flat season, and the new Gallic training maestro looks to hold a strong hand today with SAHLAN (NB).

The four-year-old finished last season on the crest of a wave with high profiles victories at Deauville and Longchamp and ran a cracker at the Breeders’ Cup too. At 12/1 in our sports betting market, he’s a strong each-way player.

3.10 – 6f Carnarvon Stakes (Listed Race)

The highly tried ALBERT EINSTEIN has been given a little bit of a reprieve this weekend with a run in a Listed contest pencilled in by Aidan O’Brien.

If the real Albert Einstein turns up, then he should really be one of the bankers of the afternoon.

3.45 – 1m4f London Gold Cup Handicap

AL AZD is currently one of the apples of Roger Varian’s eye, and the three-year-old’s great run of form can trundle on into Saturday.

Stable regular Ray Dawson can steer the Dubawi-gelding to victory.

4.20 – 6f World Pool Handicap

KORKER is a regular in these top handicaps and I’m giving him yet another chance to show his true colours in this 15-runner handicap.

Drawn 13, he can work his way into contention in the final stages.

5.00 – 1m Handicap

Richard Hannon’s has been sending out winners for fun over this last week, and it would come as no surprise to see CLASSIC in the frame.

Second here a month ago in the Spring Cup, another bold show is on the cards.

5.40 – 1m Handicap

Bottom weight CHAPTER must be worth an interest for his Highclere owners and Jason Watson over this one-mile trip.

After an educational grounding in Nursery Handicaps last season, the three-year-old can make the most of his lowly 8st 9lb weight allocation.
